STRIKE * USA: MORE ABOUT INDEPENDENT AMERICAN TRUCKERS' ONE

* Local Drivers Park Their Trucks in Protest

Savannah,GA,USA -WSAV/TV, by Alice Massimi -Apr 03, 2008: -- Honking horns and signs calling on other truck drivers to strike and shut down was what drivers saw on Bourne Avenue Thursday... The first day of what some drivers say could be a long battle... The Georgia Ports Authority says truck traffic was down fifty percent... While many of these drivers admit they'll lose money and in some cases their jobs by not working today they say their losing so much money anyway it doesn't matter... Rallies like this aren't just taking place here in Savannah... In Baxley truckers also got together... They too say they are willing to park their trucks as long as it takes, but they say it all depends on how united the drivers remain... (Photo by Calvin Knowles)

* Trucks drivers in far east El Paso held a second day of protests off I-10 and Eastlake

El Paso,TX,USA -KVIA/ABC 7 -April 3, 2008: -- ... Many truckers are pulling over to the side of the road to protest rising diesel prices. They waved at drivers and held up signs, hoping others feel their frustrations. Diesels prices are currently hovering around four dollars a gallon in the Borderland and are even higher throughout the nation... The protest, which mostly consists of independent drivers, has nearly tripled since Wednesday. Almost 20 truckers pulled over to the side of the road Thursday. Rising diesel prices have made it difficult for them to fill up their gas tanks, many said...Even the truck drivers that do not pull over get in on the action, honking their horns to show their support

* Southeast Texas truckers roll on in opposition to high fuel prices

Port Arthur,TX,USA -The Port Arthur News, by R. Taylor -Apr 02, 2008: -- Across the country Tuesday independent truckers pulled their big rigs over in a loosely organized protest against high fuel prices. Here in Southeast Texas, truckers rolled on down the road with a keen eye looking for the cheapest diesel prices. “If this were my truck, I’d be on strike. These prices have gotten ridiculous,” said Chad Brown, 32, of Bridge City... There is a growing grassroots movement among the trucking industry to do something about the high fuel prices. The price of fuel is obscene - but is it really the fault of the oil companies such as Exxon and BP? They are operating on an 8% profit margin. Instead of going after “Big Oil”, how about going after “Big Fuel Taxes”?...

* Truckers Declare Strike

Dublin,GA,USA -WMGT, by Callie Starnes -3 April 2008: -- Middle Georgia independent truckers join a national strike for higher wages and lower fuel prices... Thursday, nearly 60 truckers met in Dublin to park their trucks, hang up their keys, and wait for state lawmakers to respond to their demands... They want companies to pass down surcharges, and the legislature to represent their interests. Truckers say they will strike as long as it takes...

* How independent truck drivers deal with high gas prices

Quincy,IL,USA -7 KHQA, by Chad Douglas -April 3, 2008: -- We all know the burden of high gas prices these days. But for independent truckers, it's even worse... KHQA recently caught up with a couple owner operators to see how high gas prices affect them, and see if a nationwide strike would work... For owner operators like Roger Walsh, it'd be hard to shut down his rig for a day. This is how he makes his living, and when his truck isn't running, he's not making any money. But after talking with Roger a few minutes, you see he feels he's not making any money even when his truck is on the road because of the high price of diesel fuel... Kavin Hunter, an owner/operator truck driver, told KHQA he doesn't think a nationwide trucker's strike would work... He wants to be heard, but fears drivers will shoot themselves in the foot if they park their rigs... He also tells us the strike is about more than high fuel prices, and some of his concerns could affect your safety on the roads.

* Trucker strike seen in Morgan County

Fort Morgan,CO,USA -The Fort Morgan Times, by JESSE CHANEY -April 3, 2008: -- At least one Morgan County trucking company has joined the nationwide truck driver’s strike in protest of high fuel prices... Leroy Johnson, co-owner of Pioneer Express in Brush, said he parked his truck March 26 and has no plans to drive anytime soon because high fuel costs are detrimental to his business... Most independent truckers are paid for the number of miles they travel, he said, and they do not receive compensation for fuel, repairs, maintenance, insurance or any other driving expenses... (Photo by Jesse Chaney/Fort Morgan Times: Standstill /Leroy and Larinda Johnson, owners of Pioneer Express trucking in Brush, have parked their semi-truck and have no plans of driving anytime soon)

* Truckers feel the pinch of high fuel prices

Fon Du Lac,WIS,USA -The FdL Reporter, by Sharon Roznik -April 3, 2008: -- Truckers driving for Timblin Trucking in Eden told their boss this week the Chicago highways were clogged with trucks driving slowly... Facing higher costs and shrinking profits, truckers, using CB radios and trucking Web sites, called for a strike Tuesday and took action by parking their semis or reducing their speed to 45 mph... Protests were scattered because major trucking companies were not on board and there did not appear to be any central coordination... Filling up at the Stretch, Dwight Franke of Southern Illinois said he's not hauling any more freight that doesn't pay enough, and aims for wide loads and caterpillar freight... "I'm just being more cost conscious, and I'm running the speed limit. I think we need to draw attention to our cause, but not make the public mad," he said... (Photo by Patrick Flood/The Reporter - Dwight Franke of Kell, Ill, works on figuring out how much he has paid for fuel over the past month as he sits in the cab of his truck)

* Charleston Police Plan for Possible Truck Rally

Huntington,WV,USA -WSAZ/TV, by Mike Waterhouse -Apr 3, 2008: -- Charleston Police say they're making plans to ensure no major traffic tie-up in the city if truckers follow through with a rally Friday... According to a news release from the Charleston Police Department, officers anticipate that portions of Kanawha Boulevard may be shut down from Greenbrier Street and California Avenue between 10am to 3pm. They plan to set up detours during this time... The possible rally is to protest the cost of diesel fuel...

* Truckers back to work after protest over fuel costs

Kingsport,TN,USA -The Times News, by Kevin Castle .2 April 2008: -- Truck drivers who parked their rigs Tuesday to protest high fuel prices were back on the nation’s roadways Wednesday, still pumping high-dollar diesel to haul goods from one shore to another... Did their protest have any impact?... “It isn’t going to be effective. A few independents isn’t going to do any good,” said Leslie Gray, manager of Kingsport-based Don Gray Trucking Co., which took no part in Tuesday’s protest... The loosely staged event by mainly independent truckers was designed to pressure President Bush into tapping the nation’s oil reserves to help stabilize fuel prices...
