Trucking Charges * Australia - Libs vote against increased ones

Trucking operators may get a reprieve from hefty increases in heavy vehicle registration charges after the federal Opposition decided to vote against the changes in Parliament

Sydney,New South Wales,Australia -The Sydney Morning Herald, by Mark Davis -March 18, 2008: -- ... The Opposition's transport spokesman, Warren Truss, said the proposed increases would push up food and grocery prices by increasing freight costs and would also amount to de facto indexation of fuel charges for truck operators... Federal and State Transport ministers have endorsed the National Transport Commission's recommended increases in registration and fuel charges for an estimated 350,000 truck operators... The NTC called for increases in heavy vehicle registration charges ranging from 2.7 per cent to as much as 78 per cent for large B-double trucks and also recommended that the fuel charge be increased by 7 per cent to 21 cents a litre... The heavy vehicle charging system is designed to raise funds from trucking operators to meet the cost of the damage their vehicles do the nation's road system... But the Opposition's stance will make it much harder for the Federal Government to implement the rises because they require legislation to pass Parliament...
