Road Toll for Large Trucks * USA - Opinions differ on

The separate-truck lanes is the one that hasn't been chewed over as much as the others yet - Move could force big rigs to avoid state altogether

Springfield,MO,USA -The News-Leader, by Sarah Overstreet -14 March 2008: -- ... Among proposals circulating to raise money to relieve Missouri's highway funds woes is to put in two toll lanes on both Interstate 70 and Interstate 44, just for big rigs... The idea is still just a discussion point now, as are other thoughts — a sales tax, toll highways for all vehicles... Economist Paul Krugman, professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University, says that when semis are forced to go through toll booths on interstates, significant numbers take indirect roads. Those roads aren't equipped for them, and the number of wrecks are higher... But Missouri State University economist Tom Wyrick says he's not so sure many trucks will take the secondary roads. "I've kinda got my doubts," says Wyrick, who was invited to be on the state's highway consulting team but didn't have time. "Time is money to these guys, and it's going to raise the cost of doing business."... But Krugman and Hancock, both, say that motor carriers will pass the toll fees on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods... Missouri State University economist Tom Wyrick, doesn't believe the toll roads will be built, anyway. "They're not going to build new roads. The government told them that Department of Transportation money is drying up. They're just looking for another revenue source for the lanes we have."...
