* The economic news today is confusing, to say the least

But Reuters reports that sales were stronger than expected – showing a 4.5 percent gain compared with holiday sales in 2006... Equally confusing are the predictions on whether the United States is heading into a recession... United Parcel Service CEO Scott Davis says the risk of recession has increased... Economists at the investment banking firm Goldman-Sachs say a recession may already have started. And Bloomberg reports that its survey of 62 economists finds a majority saying the U.S. won’t have a recession because consumer spending will help us dodge the bullet...

While it posted solid numbers in November, the business otherwise finished with a lackluster year, according to the most recent report by the Arlington, Va.-based American Trucking Associations (ATA)... How much that paralleled the local trucking industry remains unclear... Indeed, the rise of fuel prices - Oil reached a record high of $100.09 per barrel last week before dropping to $95.21 per barrel Monday - has been a major factor for trucking... 'Lackluster freight volumes': Total goods shipped by truck in the U.S. rose 3.3 percent in November compared to November 2006. It was only the second year-over-year increase in eight months but the biggest increase from year-ago levels since January 2005, according to ATA... Seeking other options: Meanwhile, a trucking slowdown could prove beneficial for intermodal operators, who combine rail and truck to move goods more economically, albeit more slowly... Cities that aren't close to railheads won't be able to take advantage of that option...
* Roemer Report Notes Increase in Trucking's Share of Nation's Freight Pool
