* South Africa - 'We see truck drivers speeding'
Drivers of heavy trucks, under immense pressure to deliver supplies during the festive season, are falling asleep at the wheel and endangering the lives of other motorists
Cape Town,South Africa -The Independent Online, by Amelia Naidoo & Troy Martens -December 11 2007: -- ... Last week, more than 20 trucks were involved in serious accidents. Over a 72-hour period, between Tuesday, December 4, and Thursday, December 6, seven crashes involving trucks were recorded by paramedics and traffic department officials on a stretch of the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal... 'Truck drivers are not meant to travel between 11pm and 4am in terms of the law... Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Colin Govender said the crashes were causing much concern as "we are not even halfway into December and already the numbers are high"... Many of the accidents involved drivers, travelling mainly on the N3, losing control of their vehicles, veering into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with other vehicles. One such crash last week involved a truck travelling on the N3 near the Tugela Toll Plaza going out of control and veering into oncoming traffic...
