Truckies speeding & running red lights * Australia: Police observe "it's not trucks, it's cars"

* Victoria - Councillor accuses truckies of speeding & running red lights

--- A Cranbourne Councillor Cr Amanda Stapledon, has singled out truck drivers accusing them of speeding and running red lights "Like crazy"... She alleges had both heard concerns from the community and saw truck drivers race through red lights in the city south of Melbourne first hand... In response the Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan told the community paper the it was often cars that were the problem... "Everyone runs red lights. South Gippsland Highway and Sladen St is a black spot ... but it's people failing to give way when they are turning rather than running red lights and it's not trucks, it's cars"...

(Video from YouTube, by bossie78 -21/07/2007: Truck video in Central Queensland Australia, driven by Cacky)
Sydney,NSW,Australia -The Friday Facts, ATA -16 Mar 2012: -- The Australian Trucking Association has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to ground trucks caught travelling at more than 115 km/h, implementing a long-standing call for action by the ATA...  NSW Roads and Ports Minister, Duncan Gay, made the decision after a series of police investigations into speed limiter issues. These speed limiters are a legal requirement, and limit heavy trucks to travelling no faster than 100 km/h on the flat...  The Chief Executive of the ATA, Stuart St Clair, said ...“The great majority of people in Australia’s trucking industry are safe, professional and responsible in their work. They do the right thing and are compliant with the law. However, there are a small number who are not. These people are a danger to themselves and others, and these attitudes are not welcome in the industry.”

* South Australia - Opinion: Brakes on Australia's most dangerous job driving a truck

(Figures show truckies are 10 times more likely to die at work than people in any other job, making their work the most dangerous in Australia)
Adelaide,SA.Australia -The Advertiser, by Ken McGregor -March 19, 2012:  --  The road transport industry is considered by many to be the lifeblood of the nation, keeping the economy moving and employing more than 246,000 Australians...  But according to the Federal Government, too much of that blood is being splattered across national roads because of "cowboy" operators who put dangerous demands on drivers and owners to deliver quickly...  Government figures show truck drivers are at least 10 times more likely to die at work than people in any other profession, making it the most dangerous job in Australia... Trucks were involved in more than 200 fatal crashes last year...  That's 15 per cent of all road fatalities and the cost to the nation is estimated at more than $2 billion...  The Government says part of the problem is pressure on drivers to speed to meet deadlines, carry illegal loads and work longer hours than permitted...

CONTROLS * Australia - Speedy solution sought

(Picture by Cathy Adams - Reg Mills, from Mills Transport in Lismore, is backing calls from the trucking industry for point-to-point speed cameras in NSW to aplly to all drivers, not just truckies)

Lismore,NSW,Australia -The Northern Star, by Ava Benny-Morrison -3 March 2011: -- Truck operators are calling for a fairer go from the next State Government... More than 100,000 cars were caught speeding by point-to-point speed cameras in NSW during nine months last year... However, the drivers never received a fine or lost demerit points as the speed cameras are used specifically for trucks... The nation's peak trucking body, the Australian Trucking Association, is now asking NSW political parties to commit to making point-to-point speed cameras applicable to all vehicles... Reg Mills, of Lismore-based trucking giant Mills Transport, said truck drivers felt hard done by... Mr Mills said that if the same speed limits applied to all vehicles, so should the consequences for breaching them... Like many responsible trucking companies, Mills's monitors its drivers' behaviour through a GPS system... The driver management program shows what speed each driver is travelling on different roads across the State and when drivers take their mandatory breaks... If a driver was found to be speeding excessively over a long period of time, they were dealt with by management, Mr Mills said...

* South Africa - 'We see truck drivers speeding'

Drivers of heavy trucks, under immense pressure to deliver supplies during the festive season, are falling asleep at the wheel and endangering the lives of other motorists

Cape Town,South Africa -The Independent Online, by Amelia Naidoo & Troy Martens -December 11 2007: -- ... Last week, more than 20 trucks were involved in serious accidents. Over a 72-hour period, between Tuesday, December 4, and Thursday, December 6, seven crashes involving trucks were recorded by paramedics and traffic department officials on a stretch of the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal... 'Truck drivers are not meant to travel between 11pm and 4am in terms of the law... Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Colin Govender said the crashes were causing much concern as "we are not even halfway into December and already the numbers are high"... Many of the accidents involved drivers, travelling mainly on the N3, losing control of their vehicles, veering into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with other vehicles. One such crash last week involved a truck travelling on the N3 near the Tugela Toll Plaza going out of control and veering into oncoming traffic...
