* India - More Reasons to Question the Indian Miracle?

Mumbai,India -Road Transport (UK) -8 Oct 2007: -- One reason at any rate; Ashok Leyland has just released its September figures, and they’re not good... In fact, they’re approaching piss poor; sales fell by 10.78 per cent to 6783 units from 7603 units a year previously. Exports were also down, to 480 units from 552.
In the medium and heavy sectors, Ashok saw a decline of 11.1 per cent, but LCV sales actually rose by 2.6 per cent...
Whilst the company will point to the fact that its FY2007 sales are – to date – up by 2.6 per cent, we continue to wonder just how robust the Indian truck market really is... Obviously, India is one of the great opportunities for the truck business; the current scramble for Eicher is a clear demonstration of the desperation on the part of European OEMs to get a foothold therein. But five years down the line, we wonder what things will be like; crumbling edifices and all that sort of thing...


* India - Tata Increases CV Prices
New Delhi, India -Road Transport -9 Oct 2007: -- Tata Motors has increased prices across its commercial vehicle range by 2.5 per cent, despite the fact that the Indian CV market appears to be weakening... This report says that the price increase has been brought about by the costs involved in meeting new mandated regulations for safety and to partially offset increase in input costs. The increase will apply across the entire Tata CV range... Today, Angel Gurría, the Secretary-General of the OECD gave a presentation on the Indian economy in New Delhi, in which his words were not minced. Notably, he drew attention to Indian manufacturing performance, saying that: “Although performance has been improving this decade, the surprising feature of the Indian economy has been the relatively mediocre development of the manufacturing sector, despite the underlying advantage of low labour costs”...
