Speed-limiters * Canada - Restrictors dangerous, trucker says
Transport Canada studying speed-limiters for all transport trucks
Barrie,Ontario,Canada -The Barrie Examiner, by RAYMOND BOWE -September 05, 2007: -- A veteran truck driver says limiting transports to 105 km/h could potentially make the highways more dangerous and take money out of truckers' pockets... The federal government is looking into new technology that could prevent transport trucks from exceeding 105 km/h. The trucks would have their engine microchips permanently programmed not to exceed that limit. Ontario has already promised to make "speed-limiters" mandatory, but with a provincial election this fall, it's not clear how quickly the province will be able to move... Kevin Dufault, owner of Rodgers School of Transport Truck Driving in Barrie says governing speeds could pose a danger, including the possibility of getting stuck on a hill with a full load. Transport Canada is studying how speed-limiters will affect road safety, and whether they might have economic consequences, such as whether American truckers might avoid Canadian routes... Recommendations are expected next spring, and federal and provincial transport ministers could make a decision as early as next fall... "They always go after the trucks," said Dufault, "There's a big noise when they crash and they cause more damage. ... (Picture by Rohan Phillips)
