Detroit,Mich,USA -The Detroit News -August 30, 2007: -- ... About 85% of vehicles are currently tested by NHTSA, more to be added shortly... All vehicles must have tire pressure monitoring systems, also beginning Sept 1... All automakers must add side air bags in 50% of vehicle up to 8.5K pounds by 2009... Critics says NHTSA ratings aren't tough enough, most vehicles given 4 or 5 stars... Gas-electric hybrids to take biggest hit, as much as 20%, as "real" EPAs posted... Go to www.fueleconomy.gov to see comparison of 2007 mileage ratings vs 2008... New EPA stickers drop most model city driving estimates by 12%, highway to 8%... 2008 is 1st of 3 transition years; by 2011, all automakers must use new system...
