Safety * USA - Boos For Truck Ban

Critics Of Avon Mountain Decision Say Problems Will Surface Elsewhere

Newington,Conn,USA -The Hartford Courant, by KATIE MELONE -September 13, 2007: -- Several Farmington Valley officials joined forces on Wednesday to fight a temporary Avon Mountain ban on large trucks, arguing that it will merely push the problem of unsafe trucks from Route 44 to narrow arterial roads unequipped to handle such traffic... The ban, which runs from Mountain Road on the West Hartford side to the base of the mountain in Avon, does not affect trucks making deliveries from West Hartford to Avon. It will go into effect after the state puts up signs - in about five to 10 days - and will expire Jan. 1... Officials said Wednesday that 30,000 to 35,000 vehicles cross the mountain daily, about 5 percent of which are trucks. Officials did not know how many trucks would be affected by the ban... Lillis, right, talks to Dan Diaz, of Vernon, left, a driver for New England Transportation, Inc., of South Windsor, after Lillis had Diaz pull his truck over for an inspection on Route 44 in Avon Monday. Lillis said that during his inspection he found an unsecured load in the truck trailer. He also found that the trailer had one flat tire and that the truck chassis had an under-inflated tire. A bar to secure the load was put in place at the scene)
