Safety * USA - CHP subjects truckers, trucks to rigorous checks

The trucks outside the inspection station crawl by in a slow-motion conga line. Hay hauler. UPS. Gas tanker. Most get the green light and move on. But many do not.

Oakland,CA,USA -The Inside Bay Area, by Patrick May & Julia Prodis Sulek -7 May 2007: -- The California Highway Patrol officers looking out the window of the Nimitz Inspection Facility on Interstate 880 have a close look at the health of the Bay Area's trucking corps, now in the spotlight after last week's gas-truck explosion that collapsed a ramp in the MacArthur Maze... The inspectors have seen it all. The ugliest featured prominently in the office "Hall of Shame," where Polaroid photos of bald tires, broken brake springs and missing lug nuts show how many trucks are just a minor malfunction away from a highway disaster... The challenge for inspectors is a bit trickier than just looking more closely under the hood. They may catch many of the mechanical problems, such as faulty brakes. But what's harder to detect, and actually causes more accidents, is the error-prone driver... On average, more than 3,000 trucks a day make a mandatory pit stop at the Nimitz inspection station in Fremont, one of 16 such facilities that operate around the clock in California. Every truck over 10,000 pounds is checked. In 2006, of the 1.1 million trucks that passed through Nimitz, 12,531 were pulled aside for a closer look. Inspectors pulled 127 of these trucks out of service for serious violations... At roadside inspection stations like the Nimitz, there is increased emphasis, Duane DeBruyne, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Transportation said, on checking driving logs to make sure truckers have had enough rest, as well as medical certifications to make sure they are in good health...
