Dangerous Roads * USA - They are full of trucks hauling hazardous loads
Not just gasoline and compressed gas, but materials such as nitroglycerin and dynamite, chlorine and ammonia, even radioactive materials...Sacramento,CA,USA -The San Francisco Chronicle (San Francisco,CA), by Tom Chorneau -May 6, 2007: -- Chevron Corp., California's second-largest supplier of retail gasoline, operates a fleet of 80 tanker trucks and contracts with about 80 others to deliver its product to stations up and down the state... Most of the trucks operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That's close to 50,000 miles driven each day, and most of the time without incident or attention... Indeed, dangerous materials are delivered almost every day to businesses and government agencies located in and around residential neighborhoods, busy commercial districts, schools and hospitals all over the nation... Last weekend's fiery crash on the MacArthur Maze was a vivid reminder of the risks involved with transporting hazardous materials. Critics say higher standards for drivers and a better system for tracking dangerous cargo would be big improvements... Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen also, said restrictions should be put in place to prevent anyone with a criminal history from becoming a hazardous materials driver... "They should not be allowed to be driving these sorts of material," she said. "There's too much of a risk"...
