Back-Seat Driver * USA - Bay crash raises local ramp fears
The fear factor on freeway connector ramps took a leap last week after the dramatic tanker truck crash in Oakland Sunday
Sacramento,CA,USA -The Sacramento Bee, by Tony Bizjak -May 7, 2007: -- The gas-filled tanker somehow rolled and exploded, causing an elevated freeway connector to collapse... It caused a few Sacramento readers to ask whether this area could see a similar crash... Caltrans' response: Yes. Of course... Sacramento is crisscrossed with interstate freeways carrying a nonstop armada of commercial trucks, including gas tankers, many of which must make some tight turns on freeway connectors... CHP officials say speed may be the cause of the Oakland freeway crash. A few truck drivers we talked to at the 49er stop in Natomas said they wouldn't be surprised if the driver fell asleep. The crash happened at 3:45 a.m... "No matter how much you just slept, 3 to 6 a.m. is a tough time," said Joe Parriet of Michigan, who hauls cars from coast to coast. "It's natural to get sleepy."... Trucking association officers countered that trucks must run day and night to gas stations and stores to keep up with consumer demand... The elevated section of highway that carries motorists from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, seen at background left, to a number of freeways was destroyed early Sunday when the heat of a burning gasoline tanker truck weakened part of one overpass, crumpling it onto another)
