Story * USA - Trucking in memories
Pittsburgh,PA,USA -The Pittsburgh Post Gazette, by Shari L. Berg -Nov 30, 2006: -- His eyes sparkled like a child's on Christmas morning, but Arthur Eddy isn't a child... You'd never have known it to watch the eager 91-year-old as his Christmas wish came true. That wish was to step back into the world of truck mechanics, a career he pursued for 42 years... As part of the St. Barnabas Presents for Patients program, Mr. Eddy, who lives at the Arbors at St. Barnabas in Valencia, got the chance to do just that Nov. 22 when he got a surprise visit from John Eckhoff, of North Huntingdon in Westmoreland County, drives a big rig for Trans Am Trucking in Kansas and agreed to bring the rig to The Arbors for Mr. Eddy to examine, he said he'd seen many changes in how trucks operate, such as improvements to the braking system. Now trucks have all sorts of modern gadgets, he said, including microwave ovens, televisions and refrigerators. Mr. Eddy chuckled as he examined the rig that was far beyond what he remembered working on in his days as a mechanic...
