* USA - Experts discuss ways to combat cargo thefts
Orlando,FL,USA -Ocala.com (Ocala,FL), by JOE CALLAHAN -1 Dec 2006: -- About 100 officials from 14 states gathered Wednesday to create the first national cargo theft task force in hopes of combating the crime that industry officials believe costs Americans $15 billion annually... The gathering, dubbed the National Commercial Vehicle and Cargo Theft Initiative workshop, provided a stage for cargo theft experts to discuss ways to combat the thefts of goods from trucks, railcars and sea containers... The meeting, spearheaded by Marion County Sheriff's Office and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, came on the heels of three successful Florida summits that began in Tallahassee in 2004... * USA - U.S. funds to help reduce vulnerability identified after 9/11 - City port security gets boost
Chicago,Ill,USA -The Chicago Tribune, by Jon Hilkevitch -Nov 29, 2006: -- Help is on the way to replace outmoded security at Chicago-area ports, which have remained vulnerable to nuclear or biological weapons attacks in the years since 9/11, officials said Tuesday... The federal government is sending about $11.5 million to ports in the region to expand video surveillance, install intrusion-detection technology for container shipments and improve communications among federal, state and local agencies... Chicago received $7.5 million of the total funding to upgrade security at the sprawling Port of Chicago along Lake Michigan on the South Side...

* USA - Port of Oakland to test cargo radiation detector - Device can distinguish harmless radiation from bombs, makers say
Oakland,CA,USA -Inside Bay Area, by Paul T. Rosynsky -29 Nov 2006: -- A device that can check shipping containers for radiation as they're unloaded will be tested at the Port of Oakland next year in the continuing effort to prevent a terrorist attack... Dubbed the VeriSpreader, the instrument should give U.S. Customs agents the ability to detect and identify any radiation lurking inside containers shipped here from all over the globe... The VeriSpreader is essentially a network of detectors that could be outfitted on a standard shipping crane hoist. It should be able to quickly tell the difference between a container filled with bananas and one filled with a dirty bomb. Speed, as well as safety, is of the essence in the shipping trade...
