* Canada - Garbage trucks now police eyes and ears

Duncan,British Columbia,Canada -The Cowichan Valley News Leader, by Danielle Bell -Nov 11, 2006: -- Waste Management of Canada Corporation has launched a new crime-watch initiative that has Duncan garbage truck drivers acting as eyes and ears for police on Vancouver Island streets... Garbage truck drivers cover routes on a regular basis that police may not, such as near construction sites, alleys and parking lots, said Cam Hantuik, director of public affairs of Waste Management of Canada's western Canada division, noting their familiarity of routes will help drivers recognize anything out of the ordinary... In Calgary, a garbage truck driver reported a man to police who was smashing car windows. Based on the driver's description of the man and his location, he was arrested shortly after... In Brandon, a garbage truck driver used his training to help stabilize a bleeding man until emergency services arrived... * USA - State police take trucks off road

Indianapolis,IND,USA -The Indianapolis Star -Nov 12, 2006: -- Indiana State Police have taken dozens of big trucks off the road as part of a major effort to check compliance with highway rules... They joined law enforcement agencies from Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia on Wednesday and Thursday in a move to target unsafe commercial vehicles... Indiana State Police said 77 vehicles and 38 drivers were taken off the road as officers found 247 violations.
