Bangkok,Thailand -The Bangkok Post, by CHRIS CATTO-SMITH -14 Nov 2006: -- As oil prices spiral upwards, economies that depend on a disproportionate use of road transport to support their manufacturing and export markets will continue to suffer, if not eventually become moribund... One organisation that is actively lobbying to reverse this trend is TIFFA (Thai International Freight Forwarders Association). A recent report by its Transport and Traffic Information Centre states that the Thai transport sector is consuming some 300 billion baht worth of oil each year. Thailand faces a significant problem in remaining competitive in the global marketplace should the price of oil increase from its current $59 a barrel to the predicted 12-month forecast of $77 a barrel... The Logistics Digest report highlighted that Thailand can reduce costs and remain competitive through greater use of multi-modal transport. This involves two or more forms of transport (road, rail, air, sea), which often require shared handling facilities...
