Production Affairs - USA - Volvo plant running at 'full speed' for now

Costly new emissions standards have truckmakers eyeing a downturn in 2007

DUBLIN,VA,USA -Roanoke Times (Roanoke,VA), by Angela Manese-Lee -Oct 09, 2006: -- Talk of layoffs started in snatches over the summer. And maybe with production levels demanding overtime and Saturday shifts, the talk was easy to shrug off. But now, employees at the Volvo Trucks North America plant in Dublin say expected layoffs are a regular part of lunch and break time conversation... Ed Blevins, a supervisor in the Radford office of the Virginia Employment Commission, said the cyclical nature of the truck manufacturing industry is well-known among those who sign up for jobs with Volvo or Mack... "People who do production in this part of the world know that's how it works," Blevins said. But "the money's so good and the jobs are so good that a lot of folks want to do that"...
