* USA - With GM Gone, Ghosn May Look To Ford
Detroit,Mich,USA -Forbes, by Joann Muller -4 Oct 2006: -- The collapse of talks regarding a three-way alliance between General Motors, Renault and Nissan Motor on Wednesday now opens the door for Ford Motor to explore a similar deal with the French and Japanese automakers... Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault and Nissan, has made no secret of his desire to expand the current alliance to include a North American automaker. And Ford Chairman William C. Ford Jr., who has tried twice to lure Ghosn to Ford, called him again over the summer to say he'd be interested in a potential tie-up if the talks with GM didn't pan out...
* USA - Kerkorian's Next Move
USA -Forbes, by Jonathan Fahey, 10.06.06: -- Kirk Kerkorian is not pleased with General Motors. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to give up on it... From the moment the billionaire investor waded into the troubled waters of GM, buying up nearly 10% of the company’s shares in the summer of 2005, he has pledged that he was in it for the long haul--that he felt GM was undervalued and that, with several good management decisions, the automaker could be worth a bundle... That stance was thrown into doubt on Friday when Kerkorian’s ally on the GM board, Jerome York, who became a director earlier this year, abruptly resigned and Kerkorian rescinded his offer to buy as many as 12 million additional GM shares...
* USA - Common sense a mustto deal with heavy trucks
Augusta,ME,USA -">The Central Maine Morning Sentinel, by Mari Austin (Norridgewock,ME) -Oct 9, 2006: -- I feel there should be a little more added to the stories concerning big heavy trucks on Maine roads... Yes, there are a lot of accidents every year that involve a big truck and a passenger vehicle... Yes, weight contributes to the outcome... Yes, the overall size contributes to the outcome, but few drivers realize that common sense also plays a big part in the outcome... A lot of people either don't realize or don't care that the 80,000-to-100,000 loaded truck they just cut off -- pulled out in front of or tried to go around while the truck is making a wide turn -- cannot stop as fast as a normal vehicle... It is becoming more often that the accidents are caused by passenger vehicles... These roads must be shared and respected by all drivers, young to old, small to big, two wheels, four wheels and 18-22 wheels...
* China - Hot heavy-duty trucks in 2007
Beijing,China -chinadaily.com.cn, by Li Huayu -10 Oct 2006: -- In 2006, a formula became famous in the heavy-duty truck market: fuel economy + high on-duty frequency + service convenience = profitable heavy-duty trucks. The formula summarizes the three key factors of a profitable heavy-duty truck and they are fuel efficiency, frequent transportation and convenient services... Energy-efficient heavy-duty trucks are popular in 2006. It is estimated that in 2007 Chinese heavy-duty truck market demand will maintain a growth rate of about nine percent, and mainstream heavy-duty truck makers will keep rolling out new products... However, what models will become the mainstream in China's heavy-duty truck market in 2007? What models should heavy-duty truck makers launch to better suit market needs?...
* Qatar - Residents call for action against erring trucks
Doha,Qatar -The Peninsula -Oct 12, 2006: -- Several residents have called for stricter action against trucks violating traffic regulations, which they said, has posed a major threat to road safety... Speeding trucks have now become a common scene on the streets of Doha. Reckless driving by some drivers has led to serious accidents and many truck drivers don't abide by the speed limits specified for them... Strict punishment against the drivers is the only way to prevent this. A driver, who is found to be violating the rules must be banned from driving at least for six months, he added...
