* Germany - Dutch Special Speed Limit Zones
Germany -TNN (UK) -3 Oct 2006: -- The Dutch Ministry of Transport is refusing to remove special speed limit zones around four of the country's largest cities, which were put in place in a bid to improve air quality... Transport Minister Karla Peijs is refusing to remove the 80kmh zones and speed checks around the four largest Dutch cities despite calls for their abolition. To improve the flow of traffic, Minister Peijs said extra measures such as improved road markings and signage will be put in place...

* USA - Honda's advanced converter neutralizes pollution in diesels - Will it Work?
USA -AutoWeek, by RICHARD TRUETT -3 Oct 2006: -- It looks like Honda Motor Co. has done it again, this time with diesels... Using advanced engine controls and a new type of catalytic converter, the Japanese automaker says it has developed a 2.2-liter diesel engine that can run as clean as a gasoline engine... Unanswered questions abound. But if Honda pulls it off, it would be a breakthrough... It cemented Honda's reputation for engine wizardry... The big advantage of diesels is that they are about 30 percent more fuel efficient than gasoline engines. So, with a clean diesel, Honda could sell in the United States an Accord family sedan that gets more than 40 mpg on the highway. Honda's diesel Accord sold in Europe gets 44 mpg... Honda plans to start selling the clean diesel in the United States in 2009...

* Sweden - Volvo will end production of bio/natural gas vehicles
Stockholm/Sweden -AutoBlog Green (USA), by Derrick Y. Noh/Monsters and Critics/Goteborgs-Posten -Oct 5th 2006: -- ... on Wednesday, Volvo announced that it would discontinue its development of biogas and natural gas-fueled vehicles... According to the online version, Volvo spokesman Christer Gustafsson said that, instead, they would focus on hybrid and ethanol solutions as E85 is more readily available than natural gas at filling stations...

* USA - Nissan Puts Resources Into the Hybrid Trend With a New Altima
Los Angeles,CAL,USA -Los Angeles Times, by John O'Dell -Oct 04, 2006: -- Nissan Motor Co. rolled out its first hybrid car Wednesday, making it the last of the large Japanese automakers to field a fuel-efficient gasoline-electric vehicle. The new Altima will be the 14th hybrid to hit the U.S. market since Honda Motor Co. kicked things off in 1999 with its two-seat Insight. But Nissan isn't plunging deeply into the pool, as have Honda and Toyota Motor Corp., whose popular Prius, introduced in Japan in 1997 and the U.S. in 2000, has made it the global hybrid leader... Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has said, though, that he can't make a business case for the expensive technology. The company, he has said, is building the Altima hybrid to satisfy California regulators' demands for reduced emissions and greater fuel efficiency from the major automakers...
