COMMENTS & OPINION - USA - Battling the big rigs

End of the road? We hope not

Trenton,NJ,USA -The Trenton Times -Oct 05, 2006: -- The trucking industry may have won the battle, but the war involving New Jersey regulations governing where big rigs can go may not be over... The state lost its appeal of a federal court decision that said it couldn't ban trucks from using state roads such as Routes 29 and 31, unless they were making local deliveries. The state appealed the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which earlier this week refused to hear New Jersey's argument about why big interstate carriers should be banned on certain state and secondary roads... That may be asking too much, but when it comes to safety and quality-of-life issues, the effort must be made...

* USA - "Clean" low-sulfur version of the fuel will help environment, but truck companies may pass higher costs on to customers
Houston,TX,USA -The Houston Chronicle, By BRETT CLANTON -Oct. 7, 2006: -- Prepare to say goodbye to those smelly fumes and black exhaust clouds. Diesel is starting to clean up its act... On Oct. 15, truck stops and gas stations nationwide will begin selling "clean" diesel fuel at specially marked pumps, part of a long-range plan to eliminate most harmful diesel emissions... But the changeover it comes at a high price... Because the fuel will cost more to produce and distribute, it is likely to cost more per gallon at the pump, which doesn't sit well with trucking companies...
