* Behind the GM-Nissan Dance
USA -Forbes, by Jerry Flint -1/14 August 2006: -- The bean counters at General Motors, Nissan and Renault are very busy right now, trying to figure out how many beans they might save by combining operations. That is a 90-day trip to Fantasy Island. But to clear it all up, here are the answers to questions you wanted to ask... Then the sole purpose of the exercise, excluding pushing up the stock price for Captain Kirk, would be … ? To get Ghosn to Detroit, to get the lead out and to slow down Godzilla's advance by confronting it with a bigger car conglomerate than exists now... Will it happen? Maybe. When Dieter Zetsche, the chief executive of DaimlerChrysler, was asked about the potential combination, he said that sometimes "the news in itself is the purpose, not necessarily leading to a result."... He meant that the mere talk of the combination may accomplish Kerkorian's objective, which is to push up the stock price. Dieter knows both sides of the auto merger (or partial merger) game, having come to America for Daimler and turned around the failing Chrysler acquisition while watching, from afar, as Daimler's deals with Mitsubishi and Hyundai went up in smoke...

Japanese brand's success on U.S. coasts, fuel-efficient models push it toward end of automaker's 80-year rule
USA - The Detroit News/Bloomberg News, by Greg Bensinger and Kae Inoue -1 August 2006: -- Toyota Motor Corp., buoyed by demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, is moving closer to ending General Motors Corp.'s 80-year reign as the world's biggest automaker... Toyota's sales grew 7.1 percent to 4.36 million in the year's first half... GM's fell 2.3 percent, to 4.6 million... GM's advantage, now 240,000 units, has shrunk to less than half its size of 12 months ago... Toyota is advancing in large part on the strength of sales in GM's home market. Toyota City, Japan-based Toyota passed GM's cross-town rival Ford Motor Co. globally in 2003, and so far this year had a 9.8 percent U.S. sales gain. U.S. sales for Detroit- based GM dropped 12.3 percent through June...
