Ethanol - USA - No answer, says report

Australia - Supply Chain Review -1 August 2006: -- Ethanol can work as a supplement to oil based fuels, but not a replacement, says a new report... The United States-based KWR Consultants argue US style ethanol, based on corn, is highly dependent on two levels of government subsidies — to grow the corn and then to produce ethanol... It argues investors should be wary about investing in ethanol production because the subsidies were not sustainable, especially if the industry grew as some promoters had forecast. In other words, the US could not afford to subsidise the scale of the industry forecast — and without subsidies the industry could not grow... The US is forecast to increase ethanol production from 15.14 billion litres in 2006 to 28.39 billion litres in 2012. This is the reason that Australia's Treasury has resisted offering US scale subsidies to ethanol production...
