Trucks on the Highway - USA - How to Live With Them

Washington,DF,USA -The Washington Post -April 16, 2006: -- The Washington area is the third-most-congested in the nation, and it is projected to grow by 2 million residents in the next two decades. Truck miles are projected to grow 36 percent in the next decade. Limiting truck usage of the Beltway and local interstates would be self-defeating, however, given the enormous growth in truck traffic that is expected. And while truck crashes grab headlines, most crashes occur between cars, and most crashes involving trucks are caused by cars... While National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show that the fatal accident rate for both cars and trucks is at a historical low, last year more than 42,000 people were killed on the nation's highways and more than 2.5 million were injured... Motorists, truckers and government working together can ensure that increasing cargo and congestion on the highways do not mean more accidents...
