Report - Australia - Trucking families hit by fuel, tax crisis

Australia -supply chain review -23 Apr 2006: -- The rising cost of fuel has only added to other issues such as changes in the tax system causing small trucking operators in regional areas to be in crisis... A report, based on on a survey of 300 truck operators and 20 freight customers in regional and remote Australia, highlights the economic and social importance of trucking to services and employment in these areas... But it shows that these smaller trucking operators are being squeezed between rising costs, of fuel and of increased bureaucracy and paperwork, and the use of market power by large operators to squeeze rates... And it says the situation will become worse if the Federal Government introduces its new fuel tax rebate scheme from July (it is yet to go through parliament) which will severely hit the cash flow of truck operators. The winner will be the Tax Office which will increase its cash flow at the expense of small truck operators...
