In some cases, that's because businesses can compensate for higher energy prices by cutting costs in other areas, such as labour expenses, or improving the fuel-efficiency of their operations or products... Other producers may need to pass along their costs but find their customers resist paying more, and that means their investors and employees feel the impact of high fuel prices long before consumers do...
