Chaos - Canada - Truckers call upon Ottawa to act

Order-in-council's expiration could lead to new chaos in the port

Vancouver,BC,Canada -Vancouver Province -19 Apr 2006: -- The spectre of another container-trucking disruption such as the one that devastated the Port of Vancouver for seven weeks last summer was raised yesterday... Following a stakeholders' meeting with federal Industry Minister David Emerson and provincial Transport Minister Kevin Falcon to address issues facing the industry, about 200 truckers staged a horn-honking protest in Vancouver... The meeting was said to be positive, but the issue for the protesting truckers is that an order-in-council that suspends the Competition Act with regard to licensing of companies doing business with the Port of Vancouver expires tomorrow... The concern is that the hauling rates set up by mediator Vince Ready last summer would plummet and that some companies would be free to undercut others...
