Aging workforce - Canada - Trucking industry facing dearth of young drivers

Ontario, Canada -Toronto Star, by STEVE ARNOLD -Apr. 19, 2006: -- A major labour shortage is looming for the industry that keeps Canada's economy rolling... Research from Statistics Canada shows the country's trucking industry could lose as much as 20 per cent of its workforce in coming years, and young people aren't coming into the industry in enough numbers to replace those departing... That's a frightening statistic, given that more than half of everything Canada exports, 78 per cent of its imports and 90 per cent of its food, moves to its final destination over the road... According to Statistics Canada, nearly 271,000 people worked as truckers in 2004 with an average age of 42 for company drivers and 45 for self-employed owner-operators... Most troubling, however, is the fact that 18 per cent of drivers are 55 or older, compared with 13 per cent for the workforce in general. In 2004, the over-55 age group outstripped the number under 30. Only 5 per cent of the trucker fraternity are under age 25, compared with 15 per cent of the workforce generally...
