DETROIT,Mich,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce Hoffman, Brett Clanton and Josee Valcourt- 8 Jan 2006: General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., entering a do-or-die year, came out swinging at the North American International Auto Show on Sunday with a slew of new models, but Japanese powerhouses Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and other rivals showed no signs of giving an inch... A torrent of splashy introductions, from subcompacts to luxury sedans and large SUVs, signaled that automakers are gearing up for even fiercer competition this year...
* Kerkorian: GM must step up its overhaul - Expected dramatic cuts in dividend and executive pay
Detroit,Mich,USA -The Detroit News, by Bill Vlasic -8 Jan 2006: Kirk Kerkorian is about to send a pointed message to General Motors Corp. to move faster and harder to fix the problems that have crippled GM's profits and ravaged its stock price... In a major speech to analysts Tuesday, Kerkorian adviser Jerry York is expected to challenge GM to further overhaul its operations, set timetables for a turnaround, and come to terms with pressing issues involving the United Auto Workers...
* Korean, Chinese Automakers Make Splash in Detroit
Seoul,S. Korea -chosun.com -9 Jan 2006: The emergence of Korean and Chinese automakers as serious contenders has also caught the media's attention. Hyundai Motor showcased its Talus, a SUV concept car, and the New Santa Fe, which will be made at the company's new Alabama plant for the U.S. market. Korea's leading automaker expanded its exhibition space and increased the number of models on display to 19. Its affiliate Kia Motors will unveil its own SUV concept car, the Soul... Chinese carmaker Geely Holiding Group became the first from the country to put a car on display at the show, the five-seater 7151K sedan. The firm plans to build an assembly plant in the U.S. between 2008 and 2009 and produce small cars priced at around $10,000 there...
* Thorough Ford cleanup
New Jersey,USA -nynews -Jan 8, 2006: Ramapo has joined the effort to get Ford Motor Co. to clean up its pollution in the Hillburn area, and the added pressure may push the matter... Ford should be told in no uncertain words how to clean this up and given the big bill. It should also be required to set up medical checkups for any resident complaining of illness that might be related to the toxic materials dumped in a highly irresponsible manner. And it should clean up every area found with its pollution...
* DaimlerChrysler's Electric Vehicles On Show at Los Angeles and Detroit Auto Shows

* General Motors woes seen causing supply chain cull
LONDON,UK -Reuters, by Gerard Wynn -8 Jan 2006: Struggling carmaker General Motors is putting fresh pressure on its vast network of suppliers, which was trimmed by 500 firms in 2005, prompting fears of further U.S., European auto supplier bankruptcies... The price squeeze could benefit East Asian firms as the world's biggest carmaker said one way its suppliers of auto parts could cut costs was to source from low-cost countries...
* Volkswagen planning factory in Russia

DETROIT,Mich,USA -Bloomberg, by Jeremy van Loon -JAN 9, 2006: DaimlerChrysler said Sunday that its worldwide sales increased 3.8 percent last year on demand for a revised Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle and Chrysler models like the 300 sedan... Sales rose to 4.05 million units from 3.9 million vehicles a year earlier, said DaimlerChrysler, which is based in Stuttgart...
* VW to specialize by country
DETROIT,Mich,USA -Bloomberg, by Jeremy van Loon -JAN 9, 2006: Volkswagen reported that it sold 5.34 million units, a 3.2 percent increase, in 2005... Volkswagen, the largest European carmaker, said it planned to build more vehicles in the coming years designed for specific markets in an effort to increase faltering sales in the United States and China... Volkswagen is sending German employees to live in the United States, China, India and Russia to study consumers in those countries and get a better sense of what they want to buy...
