Offense - USA - Big 3 go on

Automakers pin hopes on do-or-die new model push
Detroit,Mich,USA -The Detroit News, by Bill Vlasic -8 Jan 2006: -- Amid the storm clouds of restructuring costs, labor problems and volatile gas prices, Detroit's Big Three automakers are counting on a blitz of new products to brighten their prospects for success in 2006... Both General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., desperately need to refocus attention on their product lineups in the year ahead. At the Chrysler unit of DaimlerChrysler AG, the goal is to build on recent market share gains with even fresher offerings... Scenarios of doom and gloom have clearly taken a toll on the image of the traditional domestic auto industry. Banner headlines about massive cost-cutting efforts at Ford and GM, as well as the bankruptcy of auto parts giant Delphi Corp., have cast somewhat of a pall over Detroit... But a new year, a new auto show and a raft of new products offer hope that the game is far from over. As Mark Fields, Ford's new head of its Americas division, said last week, "It's time to play offense"... (Dodge's Photo: The five-door Caliber hatchback concept)
