Taxes - UK - Drivers pay £500 per ton of CO2...
The Environmental Transport Association has called on the Government to cut the tax on petrol, as it unfairly penalises motorists.
UK -Telegraph -24/09/2005: -- ETA director, Andrew Davis, said: "As a green motoring organisation, we agree that citizens should be responsible for the effects they have on global warming. We question the validity of this tax, however, as it requires motorists to pay over £500 for each ton of CO2, whereas industry, commerce and households only pay £7 a ton. Charging motorists 75 times as much as everyone else is wholly disproportionate. It is bad for motorists, our transport system and the environment. Everybody loses"... Motorists in Britain produce 38 million tons of CO2 annually, compared with 52 million tons from industry and 62 million tons from offices and homes... Meanwhile, the Association of British Drivers has dismissed the Chancellor's claims that the high price of fuel is the fault of OPEC. According to the ABD, even if Gordon Brown gave us the oil for nothing, UK pump prices would still exceed 70p, higher than in Greece and Spain, because the Government takes 61.5p in taxation, in addition to "well-to-wheel" forecourt, refinery and distribution costs...
