Protests - Australia - More blockades planned in truckies' fuel price protest
Australia -ABC News Online -23/09/2005 :-(( Truck drivers say they are staging a series of road blokades across Australia today to protest the rising cost of fuel... A blockade of the Pacific Highway in northern New South Wales disrupted one of the nation's major roads for more than eight hours and has now been cleared... A line of over 100 trucks stretching up to two kilometres blocked the Pacific Highway from the Macksville Bridge, closing the road in both directions... The Long Distance Owners and Drivers Association, says the protest highlights that rising fuel prices are a threat to their owner-drivers survival and they are calling for fuel surcharge subsidies to be passed onto drivers rather than the transport operators... LDODA President Bunny Brown says owner-operator truck drivers are absorbing too much of the impost of rising fuel costs... says another eight protests are planned in Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory... Federal Assistant Treasurer Mal Brough says he understands the concerns of truck drivers... Transport Workers Union spokesman Mark Crossdale says some drivers are being forced to pay for the extra costs of fuel themselves...
