GreenNews - USA - Businesses finding ways to conserve

With no sign of relief from gas prices, streamlining resources becomes a goal.
Springfield,MO,USA - News-Leader, by Nina Rao -Sept 1, 2005: -- At SRC's heavy-duty division, that has meant streamlining the way diesel truck and tractor engines are tested... Instead of test-running each one for an hour, the company has reconfigured the test to achieve the same results in 50 minutes. That 10-minute cut saves SRC 5,500 gallons of gas each year... And SRC has not stopped there... The company encourages greater reuse of materials such as copper wire or aluminum pistons. It is studying water retention ponds and rainwater collection options... It is wiring a 33,000-square-foot addition at one division for solar panels... the company is hoping to soon be marketing a new type of solar panel. The company is also sponsoring teams from Crowder College in Neosho and the University of Missouri at Rolla as they design and build houses powered only by the sun... And Howard Fisk is considering battery-operated shuttle buses... Such buses would reduce both oil dependence and emissions, Fisk said, but they'd be a big change... In the short term, Fisk is doubling the company's gas mileage by retiring his least-efficient, 5-mile-per-gallon vehicles, something he'd long planned to do anyway...
