Analysis - USA/Canada - High fuel prices and high tech to fuel diesel auto sales
VANCOUVER,CP, Canada -CBC News, by STEVE MERTL -Sep 06, 2005: -- The Canadian car market is poised for a surge in the popularity of diesel-powered cars and light trucks ... projects diesel's North American market penetration could reach 14.2 per cent by 2015, from the current estimate of three per cent ... but estimates diesel's share of the Canadian market could reach 13 per cent in 10 years from the 2005 estimate of 2.7 per cent... Buyers now could get quiet, smooth-running cars that in some cases outperformed their gas-powered counterparts with the bonus of better fuel economy... Today, on average almost one out of every two passenger vehicles sold in Europe - 48 per cent - is a diesel. In countries such as Austria, France and Belgium where diesel fuel costs 20 per cent less than gasoline, market penetration has reached 70 per cent... Older diesel designs, while offering good low-speed pickup, were also limited in overall power, which meant diesel cars didn't so much accelerate as gather speed... The evolution of computerized engine management and much more precise fuel-injection system has meant better combustion and cleaner operation - thanks also to government-mandated low-sulphur diesel fuel... With the addition of small turbochargers, passenger diesels' display improved drivability, lower noise and no funky smell...
