LANCASTER COUNTY, PA,USA - Lancaster On Line, by By Paula Wolf -Sep 03, 2005: -- First the good news: The transportation, health care, business services, and wholesale trade industries showed strong growth last year in Lancaster County... The gains: In looking at the 2004 numbers, “a significant piece of new data” is the jump in transportation, which includes trucking and warehousing... From 2003 to last year, that cluster grew by 1,112 jobs, from 5,676 to 6,788, a 19.6 percent boost... Transportation now has a “location quotient” of 1.26, meaning there’s a larger concentration of transportation employees here than there are nationwide... The average payroll per employee in the transportation sector is $36,724, according to the newest Industrial Classification System figures... The county, however, is a good place for wholesale trade because it’s close to major metropolitan markets, such as Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York City, said...
