Weight Tolerance * Canada - Nova Scotia takes action to remove it

Halifax,N.S.,USA -Truck News, by Adam Ledlow -22 Aug 2008: -- The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal in Nova Scotia has announced its three-year transition plan for the removal of weight tolerance.A, B, and C train doubles; six-axle tractor semi-trailers on B-train routes; and a number of truck and trailer combinations with six, seven or eight axles who previously had their weight reduced from national standards because of regulated tolerance, had the weight restored to proper levels Jan. 1... There is no gross vehicle weight transition for these vehicles... The maximum weight on All Other Highways was increased from 38,500 kg to 41,500 kg to account for the removal of regulated tolerance. There is no transition for gross vehicle weights greater than 41,500 kg for vehicles on these roads...

Trucks' Weight Limit * USA - Senate considers upping vehicle to 100,000 pounds (45.4 tonnes) on US federal highways

Washington,DC,USA -Automotivce World (UK) (Subscription) -2 June 2008: -- The US Senate is considering a bill that would raise vehicle weight limits from 80,000 pounds (36.28 tonnes) to 100,000 pounds (45.36 tonnes) on all US federal highways, whenever the price of diesel rises above US$3.50 per gallon... At present, 100,000-pound trucks are allowed to travel on highways in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York, and in the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec, as well as on the tolled 109-mile long I-95 Maine...

Relaxed trucking weights * USA - Could bring cross-border business to Oroville

Oroville,WAS,USA -The Wenatchee World Online (Wenatchee,WA), by K.C. Mehaffey -March 29, 2008: -- A new law that allows truckers to haul heavier loads on a five-mile stretch of Highway 97 — from Oroville to the Canadian border — could bring new jobs to this Okanogan County border town... The state Legislature unanimously passed a bill this session introduced by Sen. Bob Morton, R-Orient, to allow trucks to haul up to 137,500 pounds, instead of the previous maximum gross weight of 105,000 pounds. Gov. Chris Gregoire recently signed the bill into law... The stretch of road is now known as a "heavy haul corridor."... Ken Stanton, Douglas County Commissioner and chairman of the North Central Washington Economic Development District, said the added business is likely to have a "trickle-down effect" on other businesses throughout the region... And, he added, "There are many impacts that are positive, that are not necessarily economic. It will help maintain the viability of that railroad line, which keeps hundreds of semis off the highway," he said...

Keep trucks rolling * USA - Lower weight limit wouldn't help much

Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit Free Press -23 Feb 2008: -- Michigan allows the heaviest trucks in the nation on its roads, up to 164,000 pounds compared to the national average allowance of 80,000 pounds. The Legislature could lower the weight limits. However, the state Department of Transportation says only 600-900 of the 130,000 trucks registered to operate in Michigan are licensed to carry the maximum loads, and MDOT experts don't think they're a problem because the state also requires the loads to be spread over more axles than other states... Other factors to consider: The heaviest rigs travel mainly on the heavy-duty highways, not the surface streets and local roads that have the worst pothole problems this year. Changing limits on truck weights could discourage some commerce in Michigan at a time when the state really needs business activity. One logical result of requiring trucks to carry smaller loads would be more trucks on the road...

Weight Limits * USA - Change, Should Help Some Maine Truckers

Governor Baldacci signed new emergency legislation Tuesday afternoon that will help some truckers cope with high fuel prices by easing weight restrictions

Lincoln/Kingman,ME,USA -WCSH-TV (Portland,ME), by Aaron Roberts -22 Jan 2008: -- ... The new law will increase the weight limit for logging trucks and other trucks carrying forest products from 100,000 pounds to 105,000 pounds per load. State officials say that will allow drivers hurting over the price of fuel to make an additional $200-$800 a week... According to AAA, the average price of diesel in Maine is $3.67 per gallon. That's 28 cents higher than the national average of $3.39 per gallon...

St. Paul,MN,USA -WKBT (La Crosse,WI) /The Associated Press -11 April 2007: -- A proposal to let bigger rigs onto Minnesota's state and local roads is raising objections... A group of local officials, law enforcement and others say higher weight limits for trucks would wear down roads faster and increase risks for other drivers... Triple-A president Steve Frank says the weight increase started out as a small exemption for milk trucks and finished forest products, but was broadened to all trucks without public debate...

Bill * USA - Proposed one, would increase truck GVW by 17,000 lbs

Washington,DC,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -20 Mar 2007: -- Legislation proposed by two U.S. senators could substantially raise the allowable weight limit for heavy trucks if passed... The Security and Fuel Efficiency (SAFE) Energy Act -- introduced last week by Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho) -- is an attempt to improve fuel economy by 4 percent in new vehicle fleets, including automobiles, medium trucks, and heavy trucks from 2012-2030... The bill also authorizes the Dept. of Transportation to increase freight efficiency by raising the maximum allowable gross weight for highway vehicles from 80,000 to 97,000 pounds, "so long as road safety is not compromised."...

Weight Allowances * USA - FHWA issues rule on APU's

USA -eTrucker -8 Mar 2007: -- The Federal Highway Administration recently issued final rules related to truck size and weight regulations that include guidance regarding the new 400-pound weight exception for trucks equipped with an auxiliary power unit... A provision of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 increased federal weight limits to allow for APUs. In a Feb. 20 Federal Register notice, FHWA said it will allow up to 400 pounds in axle, tandem, gross or bridge weight formula (an axle weight calculation), or the weight of the APU unit, whichever is less...
