WEATHER TROUBLES * USA: 70 mph winds

* Nevada - 70 Mph winds topple trucks, spur Las Vegas power outages

--- A spring storm packing winds gusting in excess of 70 mph overturned semi-trailer trucks, toppled trees and sent power lines down onto cars near the Las Vegas Strip on Thursday, snarling traffic and causing widespread power outages... The Nevada Highway Patrol blamed the wind for two tractor-trailer rollover crashes, including one that blocked U.S. Interstate 15 near the St. Rose Parkway overpass just south of Las Vegas and one on the overpass itself... Both trucks were traveling empty, and neither driver was reported to be seriously hurt, Trooper Jason Buratczuk said. He said another big rig rollover was reported on U.S. 95 in the Nye County community of Pahrump...

WEATHER TROUBLES * USA: Storms and Tornados

* Texas - Severe storms threaten Central US; Trucker dies in Oklahoma

--- A storm system blamed for the death of a truck driver in Oklahoma barreled eastward Wednesday, generating a tornado in Houston and threatening additional bad weather in the central United States... The day after three storm chasers died in a collision as they raced toward a tornado-warned storm in West Texas, the Storm Prediction Center said 17 million people from Missouri to Louisiana risked seeing twisters, hail and high winds on Wednesday. An even greater threat exists Thursday in northern Mississippi and western Tennessee... Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Gonzalez says a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Williamson ran a stop sign and slammed into a Jeep driven by Jaeger. Yarnall was a passenger in the Suburban. All three were killed instantly. WEATHER TROUBLES * USA: FHA study about impacts

* DC - FHWA: Weather-related delays are costing trucking industry billions

--- The uncontrollable external forces of Mother Nature are costing the trucking industry a lot of money. A Federal Highway Administration study assessing the impacts of weather on freight estimates that weather events are costing the freight industry billions of dollars each year... A more detailed follow-up to a 2012 FHWA study that provided a national estimate of weather-related delay affecting the trucking industry, “Regional Assessment of Weather Impacts on Freight” took a close look at 13 regions. Within those 13 regions alone, weather events cost the freight industry $3.8 million a year... However, the selected regions account for approximately 1,500 miles, which is less than 1 percent of the National Highway System, according to the report. The initial 2012 national estimate was calculated at $8 billion to $9 billion annually. The most recent report suggests that estimate could be lower. However, several limitations – including not reporting on catastrophic events that shut down highways – should be accounted for... Categories of ice and snow, fog, flood, wind, rain and extreme temperature contributed to the vast majority of traffic speed decreases in connection with weather events. Ice and snow accounted for more than half of those speed decreases and are considered the most costly of the weather events... In the context of an individual weather event, the study found the largest impact on speeds within the first two hours of the event. Small decreases were found in the hours leading up to the event, with moderate decreases occurring up to four hours after the event... However, the overall effect of weather delays on spot market rates tends to go in favor of truckers, according to Montague. Although disruptions in shipping will lower rates in the short term, heightened demand once the storm clears moves rates up...

WEATHER TROUBLES * USA

* Montana - From truck to table: How severe weather plays a role in the trucking industry

-- We are modern day consumers. How products arrive at your local store however is a long process and most likely involves a long-haul truck... Frank Molodecki, fleet risk and safety manager at Diversified Transfer and Storage says, there are many challenges weather poses on drivers making the long haul including the amount and type of fuel, establishing a route, bringing along the necessary supplies and looking at yesterday's weather and forecasting the trip. Drivers become their own specialized forecasters... During spring, severe weather can pose risks in Montana and across the country. High winds can be exceptionally tricky in navigating the Treasure State... Molodecki says consumers don't usually feel the pinch of severe weather delays until it becomes a serious issue. While Montana has tricky weather because of the vast terrain, there are some benefits of a rural state:.. Next time you're on the roads or in the grocery store, it's important to think of the drivers that have such a large impact on the goods we receive...
