TRUCKS WITH MAJOR DEFECTS * Australia: By Australian Heavy Vehicle Repairs Association

* NSW - Repair group calls for Heavy Vehicle written off register


--- Hundreds of truck drivers run the risk of purchasing and driving vehicles with major defects, according to Australian Heavy Vehicle Repairs Association Chairman Richard Nathan... For over seven years Richard, along with a number of other industry groups, have lead the charge for a Written Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) for Heavy Vehicles to protect drivers from unknowingly operating vehicles with hidden and possibly deadly problems... Unlike passenger vehicles, heavy vehicle owners, in a majority of states, have no way of tracing the history of their vehicle or past damage... The NHVR confirmed they will be supporting the move with NSW Roads and Maritime Services taking the lead...

USED TRUCK SALES * USA: Up in August

* Indiana - August’s used Class 8 truck sales up 19%; down only 2% for year

--- Used Class 8 truck sales volumes continued to show volatility in August — yet remained on a positive trend highlighted by a 19 percent increase over July, according to analysts at ACT Research Inc... Enhanced by that monthly increase, long-term comparisons show 2016 being off by only 2 percent year-to-date, according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research... The report from ACT provides data on the average selling price, miles and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo)...

Used trucks are an appealing option for a new owner/operators

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News, by Harry Rudolfs -8 March 2010: -- Used truck prices have never been lower. If you can find the work, or have your eye on a carrier where you'd like to hang your shingle, this might be the best time to jump into truck ownership... Before you buy, it's imperative to know how much it's going to cost to run, and how hard you're going to have to work to pay for it. That's why it's recommended first-time buyers have a couple years' experience under their belt before taking on owner/operatorship... The most meaningful discussions I had were with owner/operators who had made the successful transition from driver-for-hire to truck owner... Elwood Rines is one such example. His first truck was a 2002 Volvo 770 that he had been driving on behalf of an owner for Highland Transport... These days, he's a broker for Bison Transport and traded up to a 2009 Volvo. But he put 800,000 miles on the original 2002 and logged a lifetime 6.5 miles per gallon. More importantly, he made money on that tractor... Rines advice for new buyers is simple. Used Van Prices * UK - Soften following bumper months

London,UK -Road Transport, by Ian Tonkin -11 November 2009: -- Average used van prices fell slightly in October, with values dropping by £4 to £3,858, compared with September's peak of £3,862, reveals British Car Auctions (BCA)... This is the first fall in average prices since June, but values are still up by £755 when compared with October 2008... This fall in price has been blamed on an influx of fleet and lease vehicles entering the wholesale market in the last quarter of the year... Of the three main sectors – fleet and leased, dealer-entered part-exchange and nearly-new vans – it was only the one-year-old nearly-new vans that improved upon its September figure... Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -12 Oct 2009: -- It may feel good to know you will be running the cleanest-burning engines in history, but now is hardly the time to swallow a big increase in costs... There was roughly a $10,000 premium on the '07 diesels, and there'll be a similar bump up in price come 2010. Fortunately, the used-truck market is heading in the opposite direction of its newer, shinier brethren. For fleets as well as owner-operators who do happen to have some capital to spare in this weak freight market, the used-truck market has perhaps never been more attractive... There are trucks at prices to serve every budget and every need, ranging anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000... But you get what you pay for, of course... (Photo: Get Used to It. TRUCK BUYERS BEWARE * USA - It could haunt truckers purchasing used trucks

Florida,NY,USA -Land Line Magazine -27 July 2009: --While out on the road recently, OOIDA member Jim Cancel of Florida, NY, found a used truck in Tennessee he was interested in buying... Cancel said that on the surface the deal seemed too good to pass up. The truck was in good condition, the dealership was eager to negotiate, his bank seemed willing to work with him on the loan, but that something still wasn’t sitting right with him... Then Cancel said he remembered reading an article in the June issue of Land Line Magazine about some OOIDA members who have had their Highway Vehicle Use Tax – HVUT – applications rejected after purchasing a used truck because the previous owner owes back HVUT. If that truck has run in New York before and the previous owner owes back HVUT, the lien follows the truck’s Vehicle Identification Number, not the previous owner... One phone call to the New York State Taxation and Finance Department confirmed that the used truck was not “free and clear” at all...

Filling the Gap * USA - Used is in again.

But are trade-ins answering demand?

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -4 June 2007: -- Truckers shouldn't expect a huge over-supply like we saw a few years ago, but the used-truck lots may be filling up again... Trouble is, they're emptying even faster, at least in some parts of the country. Which could make it a good time to buy -- like right now -- not a few months down the road when prices are likely to be higher... Here's the situation in a nutshell: last year set records for new-truck sales as many fleets rushed to buy trucks with pre-2007 engines. Not surprisingly, they wanted to avoid the $10,000-or-thereabouts price hike commanded by diesel motors that now have to meet the more stringent new emissions regulations...
