INFRASTRUCTURES * USA: Weather troubles - Trucks parking troubles

* Nevada - Washed-out Interstate 15 is truckers' nightmare

(Photo by John Locher / Associated Press: A bulldozer works on a flood-ravaged portion of Interstate 15 near Moapa, Nev)
Las Vegas,NEV,USA -The Los Angeles Times, by JOHN M. GLIONNA - 12 Sept 2014: -- Mother Nature works in confounding ways: snow flurries in Phoenix, a balmy Christmas in Buffalo, and this week's catastrophic flood in the normally parched desert 50 miles north of this resort city... In what some term the area's worst storm in decades, a 2-mile-long stretch of Interstate 15 in rural Moapa was destroyed by 4 inches of rain that lashed the roadway in just an hour on Monday. The dying throes of Tropical Storm Norbert dumped as much rain on the area in 60 minutes as Las Vegas gets in a year... The mother of all road detours has come for thousands of vacationers, sightseers and long-distance truckers, including delays of eight hours or more, with vehicles diverted onto a gantlet of winding two-lane roads that squiggle into the cacti and scrub brush... Mario Gomez, an assistant engineer with the Nevada Department of Transportation said, the big trucks would be kept off the interstate until all four lanes reopen because there are several hilly stretches that would cause long lines behind lumbering 18-wheelers in low gear...

* Pensilvania - I-81 group: Truck traffic will increase 50% by 2040. Group feels there isn't enough parking for truckers to rest

(Photo by Markell DeLoatch — Public OpinionI: 81 Corridor Coalition estimates that I-81 truck traffic will double in less than 25 years) Chambersburg,Franklin,PEN,USA -Public Opinion, by Jim Hook -17 Sept 2014: -- Truck traffic is increasing steadily on Interstate 81, and one group wants to know where the trucks will park at the end of the drivers' shifts... I-81, stretching 855 miles from Tennessee through New York, has an estimated 5,000 marked parking spaces for trucks. That includes truck stops and rest areas... Twice that number of trucks pass Chambersburg every day on I-81... The freight that trucks haul on Interstate 81 is projected to increase 50 percent by 2040, according to data from the Pennsylvania Statewide Freight Model... Kevin Cole, interim executive director of the I-81 Corridor Coalition, goes further. He estimates that I-81 truck traffic will double in less than 25 years — even with relief that railroads offer long-haul trucking... Truck parking becomes even more crucial as the widening of the Panama Canal promises to open ports on the East Coast to worldwide trade. The Harrisburg region is at the hub of the East's distribution network...

PARKING SHORTAGE * USA - Citywide sweep nets 38 trucks

Crackdown targets illegally parked commercial vehicles

Baltimore,MAR,USA -The Baltimore Sun, by Annie Linskey -March 10, 2008: -- It was a pricey weekend for Richard Coston. He parked his truck cab in Northwest Baltimore on Friday night and the next day discovered that it was missing... Coston went to the city impound lot on Pulaski Highway Monday, resigned to shelling out $752 to get his property back... The cab was one of 38 commercial vehicles towed over the weekend in a citywide sweep to crackdown on illegally parked trucks... There have been about 1,400 complaints of commercial vehicles parked on residential areas, said Sterling Clifford, a spokesman for the city, and the periodic crackdowns are one way that the city addresses the problem... In commercial areas, the law allows trucks to park from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m., but overnight the trucks must be on private property, he said... Some of those ticketed said they believe that they were improperly ensnared in the city's sweep...

* UK - Extra motorway spaces for trucks

England,UK -Rye and Battle Today/Press Association -10 March 2008: -- Spaces for an extra 1,200 lorries will be created on the M20 if bad weather and ongoing strike action by French ferry workers creates more backlogs... Police said lorries will be able to park on three rows on a section of the M20 in Kent amid concerns that storms could create more problems. The queues of lorries have been caused by striking SeaFrance workers over pay...

“Parked in protest” * USA - Council in Minnesota to revisit truck ban after truckers speak out

All truck drivers basically have the same philosophy when it comes to trucking: If the truck’s not moving, they aren’t making any money

Hutchinson,MN,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -February 13, 2008: -- ... But money isn’t everything for trucker Jamie Marx, who lost approximately $3,000 in wages, in order to be home on Tuesday, Feb. 12, to attend a Hutchinson City Council meeting... For almost an hour, Marx said he and two other Hutchinson truckers talked to the City Council about the negative financial impact the truck ordinance would have on truckers’ livelihoods... What got their attention the most, Marx said, was when he and other truckers brought up the subject of the city providing a secured parking lot for Hutchinson truckers to pay to park if these other options would not work... An unofficial vote of the City Council has only two members still in favor of enforcing the current ban and three against going forward with the ban, including the town’s mayor and chief of police siding with truckers, Marx said...

* Australia - Councils to heavy vehicle owners: Don't park in my backyard

Australia -Blues Country Magazine -December 12, 2007: -- Councils are waging war on the trucking industry, banning operators from parking on their own properties and moving rest areas out of town... One owner-driver from the Gold Coast has reported being threatened with fines for parking his truck on his own property because he lives in a residential area... A little-known Gold Coast City Council law requires all truck owners to apply for a permit to park vehicles on their own property... Owners must meet strict criteria to win approval — from vegetation screening of the truck to engineer-approved driveways to the ability to drive in and out without reversing. Owners must also seek approval from their neighbours as part of the application...

Trucks' Park * USA - Trucker-friendly Hesperia gets tough

City looks for solutions to nuisance trucks in residential areas

Hesperia,CAL,USA -The Victorville Daily Press (Victorville,CA), by HILLARY BORRUD -November 6, 2007: -- With a Municipal Code that allows truckers to park one 18-wheel truck on half-acre properties and up to three on one-and-a-half acres, Hesperia is one of the friendlier places in the Victor Valley for truckers to live... A 2000 ordinance expanded opportunities for 18-wheel trucks to park in Hesperia, but the population of 63,000 at the time has since grown to nearly 90,000... As a result, the Hesperia City Council will discuss several staff recommendations at a meeting today, for an ordinance to tighten commercial truck parking regulations... (Photo by Sarah Alvarado: Eighteen-wheelers parked in residential areas have become a nuisance in the city of Hesperia. An ordinance that will limit the parking of big rigs will be addressed during tonight’s City Council meeting)

Police * USA - We are not ‘anti-truck driver’

Ticketing truck drivers who park in downtown Sapulpa brings protests

Sapulpa,OK,USa -The Sapulpa Herald, by JOHN SWAILS -September 12, 2007: -- The Sapulpa Police Department recently began ticketing semi trucks and trailers that were parked on Hobson Street, and there have been mixed feelings on the issue. Several truck drivers have expressed concerns over what they consider to be an “anti-truck driver policy” in Sapulpa. “There is no lot in this town to park a truck,” said truck driver Eddy Chancey... But officials at the Sapulpa Police Department have made it clear that enforcing a no-parking policy on Hobson for trucks is not personal... (Photo by JOHN SWAILS/Sapulpa Herald - Rows of semi-trucks and trailers line the parking lot of the Quik Trip Truck Stop in the Town West area. According to city officials, there is no designated place for semi trucks in Sapulpa to park)
