* Frankfurt - Daimler invests in flying taxi firm Volocopter


--- Germany's Volocopter said it has received 25 million euros ($30 million) in funding to develop an electric flying taxi, with car and truck maker Daimler among the firms providing fresh cash... Daimler joined a consortium which includes technology investor Lukasz Gadowski, who sits on the supervisory board of Delivery Hero, and others, Volocopter said on Tuesday... Volocopter said it is developing a five-seat vertical take off and landing (VTOL) electric vehicle aimed at the taxi market and plans to carry out initial demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2017... Potential competitors to Volocopter include German start-ups Lilium Jet and eVolo, as well as U.S.-based Terrafugia and California-based Joby Aviation. Commercial aircraft and helicopter manufacturer Airbus is also developing a single-seat "flying car ..."

--- Mercedes-Benz Trucks has taken 3D printing a stage further: the first printed spare part made of metal, a thermostat cover for truck and Unimog models from older model series, has passed all the stages of the stringent quality assurance process at Mercedes-Benz smoothly, and is now celebrating its premiere. This means that Mercedes-Benz Trucks is now the technological leader in the challenging segment of cutting-edge 3D printing processes for metal components... In the Customer Services & Parts division of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, automotive 3D printing began its increasing success in the production departments for the after-sales and replacement parts business a year ago. Since then, Customer Services & Parts has worked together with the researchers and pre-developers at Daimler AG to constantly improve and expand the use of the latest 3D printing processes for plastic parts. 3D printing of high-quality plastic components has now successfully established itself as an additional production method, and is particularly suitable for the production of smaller batches... Metal parts from the 3D printer excel with their very high strength and thermal resistance, and the process is therefore particularly suitable for the production of mechanically and thermally stressed components required in small numbers. Metallic components can be produced "at the touch of a button" with any geometry and in any numbers. 3D replacement parts production began with rarely ordered aluminium parts. These excel with almost 100 percent density and greater purity than conventional die-cast aluminium parts. Apart from their high strength and hardness, as well as high dynamic resistance, their production requires no cost-intensive development work or procurement of special tools. Conceivable areas of use are peripheral engine parts made of metal, in-engine parts and also parts in cooling systems, transmissions, axles or chassis. Especially when they have complex structures, 3D-printed metal parts in small numbers can be produced cost-effectively as infrequently requested replacement parts, special parts and for small and classic model series...

* Germany: Daimler plan new assembly facility in Thailand
--- Daimler is planning a new assembly facility in Thailand as it looks to rebuild its presence in south east Asia's largest heavy truck market... Through its newly established local subsidiary, Daimler Commercial Vehicles (Thailand), the truck maker expects to have a new assembly plant in place in Laem Chabang - a port city just east of Bangkok - by the end of the year... The factory will have an initial annual capacity of 3,000 units and will focus on producing Fuso brand trucks for the local market... The unit is also busy with production and exports in India. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has been supplying Fuso truck CKD kits to Kenya for local assembly since March 2016, and to Daimler Truck's production plant in East London/South Africa, where local assembly began last month...

* Munich - MAN or the dynamics of the European market

--- Operating profit of € 204 million, the MAN group benefited from the "structural improvements" undertaken by MAN Truck & Bus (excluding MAN Latin America and MAN Diesel & Turbo)... The German group MAN, a subsidiary of Volkswagen , announced its 2016 results with pride. With a turnover of € 13.6 billion, down 0.73 % from 2015, the engine manufacturer generated € 204 million in operating income, up 122 % (from 92 million euros € in 2015). Operating profit margin increased from 0.7 % to 1.5 ... In Europe, in countries like Italy and Poland, demand for industrial vehicles remains high. In Brazil, the reverse is true with a recession in progress, which justifies that the MAN Truck & Bus teams, MAN Latin America and Scania collaborate, under the control of Volkswagen Truck & Bus, to create common components... MAN also plans to develop new business models, with its digital brand RIO inaugurated in 2016, which seeks to connect all players in the supply chain : shippers, regulators, transporters, drivers and recipients...

ARTIFICIAL DAYLIGHT on Daimler truck cabins * Germany: Experiment

* Stuttgart - Daimler finds artificial sunlight could make for brighter truckers

--- Truck drivers spend a long time sitting in small space, with variable sleeping hours and long stints driving through the night. This is amplified for truckers working during winter in Northern Europe, where daylight is in short supply. A research team at Daimler has looked into the effects of "artificial daylight" in truck cabins, finding light at the right wavelength can have a huge positive impact on drivers while they work... Although we don't often think about it, light plays a big role in maintaining our mental wellbeing... Having discovered that the shape of truck cabins limits the amount of natural daylight in the cabin, Daimler undertook a two-week study in Rovaniemi, Finland. Drivers were subjected to steady light while driving, an intense blast of light before/after driving, and light at maximum intensity while they reclined in their seats and napped. Testing took place over a two-week period, and drivers drove the same routes without the artificial light to form a baseline... "Sunlight" came from a Mercedes Daylight+ module in the cabin, which emits light with a wavelength between 460 and 490 nanometers. Data was collected using electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG) and electrooculography (EOG) measurements. Drivers also gave saliva samples, their mental state was measured with standardized psychological tests, and driving performance was mapped using the on-board telematics system... Not only did drivers report a significant improvement into their mood when using the new light, but on-board data showed drivers with more "daylight" in the cabin drove more economically than their sun-deprived selves. Drivers also said they found the space in the interior more pleasing with the special Daylight+ unit fitted...

--- Volkswagen AG’s truck and bus division expects a boost in profit this year on the back of stronger sales in Europe and China as well as a slight recovery in Brazil, company officials said Monday... The company also unveiled plans to offer a service for its customers and other partners which can digitally connect vehicles... Company plans to offer service connecting trucks to customers remotely digitally, creating ‘eco-system for trucks’ ... Volkswagen Truck & Bus just ended its first year as a standalone company, grouping Volkswagen’s utility vehicles operations and truck makers Scania and MAN. In its first year, the truck division generated €1.3 billion ($1.39 billion) in pretax profit, an increase of 27% from the previous year. Revenue rose 4% to €21.3 billion from sales of around 184,000 vehicles...

World’s first all-electric heavy duty truck * Germany: By Mercedes-Benz

* Stuttgart - Mercedes-Benz eTruck trials begin

--- The world’s first all-electric heavy duty truck is set to go into limited production later this year, with trials taking place in the German market before being rolled out to cities across Europe... The Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck was first shown at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover last September, and the brand’s parent company, Daimler, has committed to putting it into small scale production, with a build number initially in double figures... The Urban eTruck has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 25 tonnes and is claimed to have a range of up to 200 miles depending on load and operational conditions... With a payload of 12.8 tonnes, the Urban eTrucks will be deployed in real-life transport situations, with Daimler aiming to get customer feedback and measure how the eTruck performs in a true working environment. Charging times, battery life, range and system configurations will all be closely managed and observed...

MERCEDES BENZ * Finland - Spy Shots: Testing Pickup Truck

* Lapland - Mercedes-Benz megabucks crew cab, or G-Class Squared
--- Mercedes-Benz was spotted testing a crew cab pickup truck variant of the G500 4×4², or G-Class Squared, deep in snowy Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland... It’s a heavy-duty yet sporty version of the iconic last edition G-class before the next generation will be launched in 2019... Compared to the “normal” G500 4×4², this pickup will grow in length and wheelbase and will comfortably sit four people while also offering an open loading space behind the cabin, though a relatively short one... The company has not revealed any official plans for the boulder and ice crawler such as the G500 it was spotted testing in the tundra... But Mercedes has confirmed investing at least $1 billion in pickup truck development...

--- Germany's Daimler plans to start building the Actros heavy truck in China by the end of the decade, Handelsblatt reported, citing the head of the truck division... Seeking to expand its role in the world's largest truck market, Daimler is targeting a five-digit production number for the Actros, the newspaper quoted Daimler Trucks Chief Executive Wolfgang Bernhard... Western manufacturers are allowed to operate in China by forming joint ventures with Chinese partners. Stuttgart-based Daimler currently produces trucks with China's Beiqi Foton Motor... The two companies are planning to invest a three-digit multi-million amount in local production of the Actros, and Daimler alone wants to set up 200 dealer and service stations, Handelsblatt said...

--- Volkswagen AG’s plan to cut 30,000 jobs in coming years in a restructuring of its embattled VW brand marks a radical shake-up, though on Friday it failed to convince investors the gap will narrow with more profitable rivals Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. ... Volkswagen executives framed the move as audacious and necessary, entailing a reduction of the VW brand’s German workforce by about one-fifth. Management, with crucial support from powerful labor representatives, aims to boost productivity by 25%, increase annual earnings by €3.7 billion ($3.9 billion), and double pretax profit margins to 4% by 2020... Mr. Müller has had to contend with the company’s emissions scandal, the tab on which is roughly $20 billion so far and could rise, narrowing his maneuvering room. Volkswagen has said it expects to eliminate as many as 25,000 positions from a global workforce of 624,000 over coming years, though Mr. Müller has ruled out forced layoffs... VW brand management and labor representatives have been embroiled in talks that they call the “FuturePact” for eight months that aim to reach consensus over cutting costs to finance big investment in electric vehicles and self-driving cars—new technologies that threaten many traditional auto jobs... MERCEDES' NEW ENGINE * Germany - The 3.0-liter M256 motor

* Stuttgart - Details about a new family of engines, complete with support for electric turbocharging
--- Mercedes offered a car with one under the hood. The new 3.0-liter M256 motor is expected to produce upwards of 300 kW (408 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb ft) of torque, compared to the 245 kW (333 hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb ft) on offer in the current M276 — which is a V6 that's been in service since 2010. In spite of the extra power, the new engine should also be around 15 percent more efficient than the current offering, and an integrated particulate filter makes it much cleaner as well... Interestingly, M256 is one of the first engines to make use of an electric turbo. Unlike a regular turbocharger, which is reliant on exhaust gas to spin up and provide a power boost, the Mercedes electric turbo can spin up to 70,000 rpm in just 300 milliseconds, offering a big shove in the back with almost no perceptible lag. It's driven by a new 48V electrical architecture, which also serves as an alternator and feeds high-draw elements like air conditioning and the starter motor... The new engines will make their debut in the 2017 Mercedes S-Class...

* Stockholm - Mercedes to Enter Light-Pickup Truck Market By End of 2017
--- Daimler AG Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche said the German auto maker will be participating in the global light-pickup truck market by the end of 2017, with the company’s Mercedes-Benz unit becoming the latest premium brand to try expanding into a segment that traditionally appealed to blue-collar buyers... Mr. Zetsche, speaking in Stockholm on Tuesday in a webcast presentation, said the auto maker is eager to fill a hole in its lineup with a midsize truck that is smaller than the big pickups popular in the U.S. He said the midsize pickup truck segment is poised to increase 40% by 2025 and is among the “most attractive targets” in the world... Daimler had earlier outlined plans to joint-develop a pickup truck with the Renault SA/Nissan Motor Co. alliance, and had shown sketches of the vehicle. Mr. Zetsche’s presentation included two brawny “X-Class” concept trucks intended to show the company’s attempt to blend the company’s luxury heritage with a pickup truck’s rugged stature...

MAN TRUCK & BUSES' news * Germany - Truck staff get job guarantee until 2025

* Munich - VW's MAN: Job guarantee applies to German, Austrian ops 
--- Truckmaker MAN will offer job guarantees to some of its staff until at least 2025, a person familiar with the matter said... Job guarantees will apply to staff at MAN Truck & Bus in Germany and Austria and automatically extend through 2030 if not terminated prior to that date. MAN has 36,000 workers globally... Volkswagen (VW) had been seeking to build a global trucks business by integrating the heavy goods vehicle operations of Scania and MAN divisions... VW last month announced details on how Scania and MAN will in future share development of engines, transmissions, axles and emissions-treatment systems to try to align the two manufacturers more closely to boost profits... With Thursday's decision, MAN is reassuring workers after restructuring last year culminated in 1,800 job losses in Europe designed to revive languishing profitability and tackle high fixed costs...

DAIMLER news * Germany - New high-tech car engine factory In Poland

* Stuttgart - Daimler Will produce a new generation of engines

--- German carmaker Daimler says it will build a 500 million euro ($551 million) factory in southwestern Poland that will produce a new generation of engines... Markus Schaefer, a board member in Daimler unit Mercedes-Benz Cars, said Thursday that production of the engines in Jawor will begin next year. The plant will reach its output capacity in 2020 with hundreds of thousands of engines made for various Mercedes car models... He estimated the plant will create hundreds of jobs, and thousands more indirectly through the need for support services in the region, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of Wroclaw. Before this new factory plan, Daimler had offered about 250 jobs in Poland...

DAIMLER CELEBRATES * Germany: Unimog's 70th anniversary

* Stuttgart - The post-war vehicle that continues working to this day

--- Daimler is celebrating the 70th birthday of the Unimog by looking back at the original model that came into being after World War II... According to the truck maker, it was October 9, 1946 when the Unimog Prototype 1 completed its first test drive... Travelling on rough forest roads in the post-war period, the original bonnet-free truck was the result of German supply shortages at the time... In June, 1945, former aircraft engine development head at Daimler-Benz AG Albert Friedrich, came up with the idea of creating an agricultural motorised vehicle that could help increase agricultural productivity and took it to Stuttgart-Untertürkheim to speak with the company... On August 4 a blueprint for the vehicle was developed by a Daimler-Benz AG engineer and on September 7 it was presented to the company’s board of directors. Despite receiving little interest from those in charge, the blueprint was submitted to the Production Control Commission of the responsible American military authority, with an application to manufacture ten test vehicles... Gaining approval on November 20 from the Food and Agricultural Group of the British and American occupied zone, Friedrich enlisted the work of metalwork company Erhard & Söhne in nearby Schwäbisch Gmünd to create the vehicles...

... On January 2, 1946 the project was handed onto Friedrich’s employee, designer Heinrich Rößler... Creating a design that is still used in the U 4023 / U 5023 Series Unimog trucks today, the original models featured an engine and gearbox positioned to the right of the middle line of the vehicle... In March, a member of the team, Hans Zabel, came up with the Unimog name by shortening Universal-Motor-Gerät (universally applicable motorised machine)... 70 years later, it has been released in 30 different models and been sold almost 400,000 times...

AT&T will provide cellular service for the new Detroit Connect Truck Data Center, an intelligent piece of hardware that connects the truck to the Internet of Things... Exclusive to the new Freightliner Cascadia, the box out of Daimler Trucks global modular system provides communications capabilities for the Detroit Connect telematics system... --- Daimler Trucks Asia (DTA) presents the world premiere of the small series of FUSO’s light-duty electric truck “eCanter” at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) 2016 in Hanover, Germany... Through customer trials in real-life conditions, the zero emission FUSO eCanter proved to be technically reliable and economic, with enough mileage and payload for daily use... The small series will be delivered to customers in the US, Japan and Europe from late 2017... DTA will further increase its global presence in mature markets and growth markets with the application of Daimler’s cutting-edge technologies in electric trucks and robust and powerful trucks...

* Sttugart - Mercedes-Benz Trucks & Krone develop highly efficient semitrailer-tractor 

 --- Mercedes-Benz Trucks and trailer manufacturer Krone worked together to develop this combination of trailer and tractor within the concept of “integrated approach,” aimed at reducing CO2 and reducing fuel consumption... This integrated approach involves everyone—commercial vehicle manufacturers, body/tyre suppliers, logistics companies and political decision-makers—in the haulage sector to play a part in reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emission of up to 20 percent compared to existing combinations. The basis of such a comparison was a 2014 standard semitrailer-tractor combination that was able to save up to 14 percent on fuel. Mercedes-Benz and its partners launched that first Efficiency Run last year... Reducing fuel consumption and CO2 is one of the biggest challenges the haulage sector is facing. The EU, for one, wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent by 2030. This demands effort from everyone involved in the haulage sector, but they also believe they can accomplish the task and not just out of responsibility for the environment and the society. The demand is also driven by the customers...
