TRUCKING INSPECTION * Australia: After truck fatal crash

* NSW - Wollongong courier truck company HQ raided after fatal crash south of Sydney

--- The Wollongong headquarters of a trucking company has been raided by police in the wake of a fatal crash south of Sydney this week... A truck associated with Barnetts Couriers collided with a car on New Illawarra Road at Barden Ridge early on Monday... The crash claimed the life of a 67-year-old Bega woman... Officers from New South Wales police today inspected a number of trucks at Barnetts' Fairy Meadow depot on Montague Street... Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Chief Inspector Phil Brooks said officers discovered various vehicle defects... It is not the first fatal accident involving a Barnetts truck... In 2012, driver Kaine Daniel Barnett crashed into a tow truck operator and university student in a breakdown lane on the Hume Highway near Mittagong, killing the pair... Mr Barnett, who is the grandson of courier company founder Bob Barnett, was sentenced to a minimum 18 months' jail...

FUTURE TRUCK INSPECTIONS * USA

* DC - Wireless inspections: 24/7 exposure of truck, driver violations

-- It’s easy to conjure a scenario of total on-highway enforcement of truck and driver regulations, enabled by a nationwide rollout of vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communications. A simple version of this system is already being tested... 

 Imagine tomorrow: 
 * Over-the-air law enforcement access to driver identity and operational hours information will be a reality. 
 * In-vehicle sensors will automatically communicate faults with roadside enforcement, flagging the vehicle for closer looks. 
 * Automation could yield driver and vehicle assessments 25 times more often than today’s inspections. 

  ... Even if they aren’t this far-reaching, regulatory applications are the next logical step in the wireless equipping of trucks. CBs, Qualcomm and satellite radio are old hat. The last decade has seen widespread introduction of electronic logging devices, remote diagnostics and many GPS-based functions, linking the truck with maintenance personnel at owner-operators’ shops of choice and carriers’ back offices... That would be a lot of automated inspections, though there could be a slight upside to it, given the scoring realities of the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program... This month, 20 or more Phase III test sites in FMCSA’s long-ongoing Wireless Roadside project are expected to be up and running in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and Georgia. Six hundred or more trucks were expected to participate...

INVESTIGATION * USA - FMCSA executes compliance sweep of moving companies

Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -4 May 2011: -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently performed a nine-city compliance sweep for household goods moving companies, resulting in fines of $25,000 each for three such movers...  Thirty-seven FMCSA staffers and state investigators conducted compliance reviews of 67 moving companies as part of the agency’s year-round “Household Goods Strike Force” initiative. The initiative is designed to protect the public from fraudulent moving companies...  The investigation targeted high risk moving companies in Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix, Arizona, New Orleans, Louisiana, Miami and Atlanta...  In March, FMCSA announced that only household goods carriers and household goods freight forwarders need to have evidence of cargo insurance on file with FMCSA...  (Image from aldomoving: professional moving services)


* NHTSA Cracking Down on Odometer Fraud

Washington,DC,USA -NHTSA News - April 19, 2011: -- Office of Odometer Fraud is division of NHTSA. Recently worked w/ local and federal officials to crack organized crime ring in Seattle, WA, area, operation had involved at least 75 vehicles... Vehicles purchased from private sellers, odometer rolled back, then sold at profit... Consumers can guard against fraud by comparing maintenance records. Also make close inspection of parts and run CARFAX Odometer Check... Accurate odometer reading can be considered safety feature... Odometer easy way to judge wear and tear on vehicle parts that affects safety... Most dangerous odometer rollbacks occur on vehicles that have been in serious crashes...

Inspection Blitz * USA - CVSA Roadcheck June 8-10

Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -April 28, 2010: -- This year’s CVSA Roadcheck inspection blitz will take place June 8-10... Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), Director of Enforcement Programs Collin Mooney, says that having Roadcheck too close to Memorial Day weekend could have put local enforcement officers around the country into an overtime situation... CVSA teams with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and other agencies, including Transport Canada as well as the Secretaria of Communications and Transportation in Mexico, in the annual blitz that aims to crack down on non-compliant trucks and drivers... Roadside Inspections * USA - CSA 2010 is coming

New carrier and driver safety rating system being implemented by the FMCSA

USA -Truck News (Toronto,ONT,CAN) -14 Dec 2009: -- If you drive trucks into the US (or send them there), you need to get up to speed on CSA 2010 – a new carrier and driver safety rating system being implemented by the FMCSA. It's already up and running in eight states on a pilot project basis and will be rolled out completely by the end of 2010. The biggest change is that drivers will be assessed their own safety rating and it will directly impact the rating of the carrier they're working for... Every 30 days, drivers and carriers will be scored based on their on-road performance. Even minor defects discovered during a roadside inspection will count against the driver and the fleet – not just out-of-service violations. When CSA 2010 is implemented, things are going to change for carriers and drivers... If you're a safe, compliant driver – congratulations, your stock is about to go up substantially. If you're a driver that has trouble adhering to the rules and you bounce from carrier to carrier leaving a trail of violations and destruction in your wake, you will no longer be employable by US-bound carriers. With your safety rating directly attached to theirs, good luck finding a carrier willing to take a flyer on you just because you've got a pulse and they have a load to move... The good news is CSA 2010 just may weed out the fly-by-night carriers and drivers and get them off the roads, for the betterment of the entire industry...

CONTROLS & INSPECTIONS * Australia - Workplace Ombudsman to audit trucking companies

Federal Workplace Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson will randomly audit road transport companies amid claims they are not complying with the Workplace Relations Act...

Queensland,Australia -The Queensland Business Review -23 June 2008: -- ... Wilson will take the blowtorch to short distance trucking companies in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Queensland and metropolitan NSW. Wilson will focus on South Australia, Tasmania and regional NSW as part of an audit into long-distance haulage... Wilson says his office, upon identifying the industry to be at high risk of non-compliance, has sent letters to more than 9500 businesses nationwide warning them of their obligations... The auditing process is to begin in August and run to October. In that time, the Workplace Ombudsman expect up to 700 will be randomly audited... Inspectors will check minimum rates, minimum shifts, split shift provisions and allowances, payslips and time sheets. Wilson may also conduct follow-up audits 12 months after the initial campaign to ensure companies are still complying... Transport and storage ranks sixth on the list of industries with the highest levels of compliance problems, with 2535 claims over the past two years, according to the Ombudsman...


* Victoria catches first 'truck hoons'

Melbourne,Victoria,Australia -The Age -June 24, 2008: -- Two truck drivers have had the dubious honour of becoming the first in Victoria to have their prime movers impounded under hoon legislation... Shortly before 11pm (AEST) on Monday a truck was clocked travelling at 90km/h, more than double the speed limit... Less than an hour later, police detected a second truck travelling at 88km/h... Police were conducting an operation targeting motorists along the Monash (South-Eastern) Freeway inbound, between Toorak Road and the entrance to the Burnley Tunnel, where road works are currently underway... What is usually an 80km/h zone has been reduced to 40km/h while the works are carried out... The trucks will be impounded for two days... Region 1 Inspector Greg Parr said enforcing reduced speed limits during road work was intended to protect the safety of the construction workers...
