INVESTIGATION * USA - FMCSA executes compliance sweep of moving companies
Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -4 May 2011: -- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently performed a nine-city compliance sweep for household goods moving companies, resulting in fines of $25,000 each for three such movers... Thirty-seven FMCSA staffers and state investigators conducted compliance reviews of 67 moving companies as part of the agency’s year-round “Household Goods Strike Force” initiative. The initiative is designed to protect the public from fraudulent moving companies... The investigation targeted high risk moving companies in Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix, Arizona, New Orleans, Louisiana, Miami and Atlanta... In March, FMCSA announced that only household goods carriers and household goods freight forwarders need to have evidence of cargo insurance on file with FMCSA... * NHTSA Cracking Down on Odometer Fraud

Recently worked w/ local and federal officials to crack organized crime ring in Seattle, WA, area, operation had involved at least 75 vehicles... Vehicles purchased from private sellers, odometer rolled back, then sold at profit... Consumers can guard against fraud by comparing maintenance records. Also make close inspection of parts and run CARFAX Odometer Check... Accurate odometer reading can be considered safety feature... Odometer easy way to judge wear and tear on vehicle parts that affects safety... Most dangerous odometer rollbacks occur on vehicles that have been in serious crashes...
