2nd Rather report * USA - Panelists continue to examine driver training land other issues

Low pay, trucking as a business being at odds with safety and deficient entry-level training and what some carriers are doing about it were just a few of the topics covered

Dallas,TX,USA -The Trucker & Land Line Magazine, by David Tanner -11 Nov 2009: ... Earlier segment featured Desiree Wood, a driver for Covenant Transport of Chattanooga, Tenn., discussed in detail her education at The CDL School in Miami and her training at Covenant, and Thomas Hansen, a former trainer at CRST Van Expedited in Oklahoma City, who discussed his experience in driver training at his former company... Some in the industry thought the show, titled, “Queen of the Road” and which aired Oct. 20, painted trucking with too broad and too negative a brush and left out trucking’s positive safety stats... Meeting at Willie’s Place truck stop at Carl’s Corner, Texas, some 60 miles south of Dallas, Rather moderated a round table discussion with Derek Leathers, chief operating officer for Werner Enterprises; Tim Dean, a Werner driver and two-time Nebraska state truck driving champion; Miles Verhoef, an independent owner-operator from Wisconsin and life member of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA); Todd Spencer, OOIDA executive vice president; and former trucker Michael Belzer, who now is an economics professor at Wayne State University in Detroit and the author of “Sweatshops on Wheels: Winners and Losers in Trucking Deregulation”... Rather’s prior controversial segment on trucking, which dealt with unscrupulous driver training schools, was recapped and part of it re-shown before the panelists got down to fielding Rather’s questions... “My personal experience is we need more training for entry level drivers. It is almost nonexistent,” Verhoef told the panel. He also shared insight into the daily life, revenues and expenses of a true independent operating under his own authority... Spencer said OOIDA has advocated for federal driver-training standards, but even despite a lawsuit against regulatory agencies in the early 1990s, “there is no training whatsoever required”. “It’s sheer idiocy, lunacy to think that you could take somebody off the street, turn ’em loose in 40-ton vehicles, and they can navigate on our congested highways with every kind of very nonprofessional driver in every kind of traffic situation in every kind of weather and do it safely without a lot of training,” Spencer said. He was grateful for the opportunity to shed light on important issues, particularly that it’s rarely the truck driver’s fault in fatal crashes that involve trucks... If trucks are involved in 5,000 fatal crashes per year, 1,000 of the fatalities are truck drivers and 62 percent of those crashes that kill truck drivers involve a single vehicle – the truck... To move the discussion forward from this point is going to require participation from policymakers, regulators and lawmakers, Spencer added... “We need members of Congress and state legislatures involved in this,” he said... (Photo courtesy OOIDA: “My personal experience is that we need more training; we need more training for entry-level drivers,” said driver Miles Verhoef (green shirt), while OOIDA Vice President Todd Spencer (blue shirt) said lack of driver training like that reported earlier was “all too common across the industry. Rather is at far right)

ATA vs. N.Y. Times * USA - Getting It Right

Fact is, the nation’s road system is our workplace. No group has more interest in improving highway safety than trucking, no matter what you read in some newspapers

Arlington,VA,USA -Transport Topics -5 Oct 2009: -- Twice in recent days, the New York Times has uncharacteristically turned its attention to the trucking industry, and twice it has tried to give trucking a black eye, strongly implying that the industry is unsafe and has little interest in getting safer... In the first instance, on Sept. 23, the Times editorialized against President Obama’s nomination of Anne Ferro to head the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, claiming that Ferro’s service as president of the Maryland Motor Truck Association disqualified her from the federal post... Her crime? She has supported the new hours-of-service rule adopted by FMCSA after long study, the very rule that has helped reduce truck-related highway deaths despite all of the carping from the Teamsters and some other interest groups. Actually, crash and fatality rates for large trucks are at the lowest level since the federal government began collecting the statistics... The Times’ reasoning is hogwash and extremely unfair to a woman who has spent much of her career making roads and drivers safer... On Sept. 28, the Times focused its latest installment of a series on distracted driving on truckers, claiming that truck accident rates are increasing even as safety improvements have brought down overall death rates... The newspaper’s numbers were wrong, and led to a correction a couple of days later that included data that show truck-involved crashes actually have declined... The Times tried to use these erroneous “facts” to show that trucking isn’t interested in improving safety...

TRUCKERS' DISCUSSION * USA - Sexism SELLS Product, ask Desiree.

If you have ever been a trainer in the trucking industry, you will now and forever be known as a sexual predator (???)

USA -Inn From The Night/The adventures of an American Trucker, by Terence Smelser -7 April 2009: -- At least those with slippery products to sell think so. Just to make things simpler: If you have ever been a trainer in the trucking industry, you will now and forever be known as a sexual predator. Well you will be if People like Trucker Desiree gets others to believe the frantic ravings being posted in her blog... The inability to deal with life “as is”, an unhealthy dose of co-dependency and just plain “me-ism” seem to drive this female to extraordinary lengths to promote what ever it is she really wants. I have made it one of my part time goals to inconvenience her and her mouth breathing minions at really inconvenient moments. This is all of course being done at “my” convenience. I have nothing to gain or loose from her bullshit. I just can’t stand a sexist or a racist and I don’t care what gender or race they are. Of course, I’m doing this, as a “friend” of mine accused me of, out of contempt and hatred for everything... (This is a trucking thing, you would not understand) (P's N.:??? Hey... taken it easy... beware your's hearth broken ... or this could be named as a unrequited love ???)

DISCUSSIONS * USA - Kevin Rutherford and the OOU

USA -Owner Operators United Incorporated, by ownerope -May 17, 2008: -- ... I don’t have a dog in this fight, so I will try to be objective in my assessment of the May 14 call- in hosted by Kevin Rutherford ... Rutherford dismissed the truck shutdown as ineffective. I would disagree. More could have been accomplished with greater participation, but the actions of a few had an impact. The shutdown and the DC “parade” focused attention in some critical issues. Lawmakers were made aware and that is a large accomplishment in itself. The recent House subcommittee hearing was instructive, the TRUCC Act has grown some legs, brokers have received notice about illegal and unethical business practices, insurance issues are being defined and the trucking industry as a whole benefited...

* ... And a comment

By: Ted -May 17 2008: -- I have been over to Kevin Rutherford’s site and have also heard him on XM... He makes me think of the guys on TV that try to sell you the “how to get rich in real estate” or “how to beat the stock market” crap... I don’t understand how he can be so against this site and all they are doing for drivers everywhere... I wonder if the owner operators united offered him money how fast he would jump on the bandwagon... I get sick of these guys that claim to be the gift from GOD. Please keep up the work here at the owner operators united... I think we need you and what you are doing... Thanks and yes I will join...
