NY,USA -Star Gazzette, by Steve Reilly -July 18, 2014: -- For the first time in 14 years, federal officials have updated the nation's list of roadways where states restrict the transport of hazardous materials... The New York City Fire Department is designated in the new 71-page Hazardous Materials Route Registry as the the only agency with authority to decide where hazmat can be shipped in New York State... The U.S. Department of Transportation's newly-revised registry, released on Monday and like the previous version, includes no listings in New York's 57 counties outside of New York City — giving haulers free rein to carry hazmat through neighborhoods, around lakes and across rivers and streams. A hazmat trucker can choose to drive on any road in the state that's open to truckers outside of New York City... New York is the only state in the nation where a local agency has been named as the state's hazmat routing agency...

* Canada - "Hazmat will expose 75,000 or more people in the Windsor area"

* Ontario - Calls Ambassador Bridge hazardous material study deficient

(Photo: The Ambassador Bridge)
Windsor,ONT,CAN -Transport Topics (USA), by Michele Fuetsch -11 June 2013: -- The city of Windsor, Ontario, said Michigan’s recommendation to allow more hazardous materials to cross the Ambassador Bridge is based on a deficient study that doesn’t consider the 75,000 people in Canada who would be exposed to accident risk... Windsor’s complaints were contained in a recent eight-page commentary sent to the Michigan Department of Transportation, which recommended in December that such hazmat loads as fuel, paint, gases and acids be allowed to cross, although explosives and radioactive materials would still be banned... Michigan’s study is “fundamentally deficient because it fails to address or inadequately addresses” such things as response capability of police and fire on both sides of the border and the economic impact if the bridge is damaged in an accident, the commentary said...

Illegal Restrictions * USA - Boston’s hazmat (FMCSA)

Boston,MASS,USA -Land Line Magazine -November 16, 2009: -- Restrictions that the city of Boston has placed on hazmat haulers are illegal according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration... Several years ago, the city informed hazmat haulers that unless they were actually delivering inside the city limits, they were outlawed during the daytime. So, hazmat trucks that were driving through the city to get to another destination could travel through Boston only at night... The FMCSA has informed the city that that’s illegal because all it does is shift the risk of a spill or explosion to other cities in the area that the trucks use to bypass Boston... City officials say they’ll take a few days to consider their options... ( Photo from lafayette.in.gov)
