TRUCKING & TRUCKERS UNION * Australia - Call to review foreign drivers ban

-- The Australian Trucking Association and the TWU – separately – have called for a review of truck driver licence training and assessment in their evidence at the Aspects of Road Safety in Australia Senate inquiry... ATA national manager government relations and policy Bill McKinley said there needed to be a commitment to consistent licencing outcomes in the trucking industry... The ATA also recommended reviewing the provisions that allow overseas licence holders to drive in Australia... The Transport Workers’ Union at the Senate inquiry called on state and federal governments to urgently close loopholes allowing untrained, illegal and exploited workers to drive trucks... The union made the call following an incident when a driver on a temporary visa was unable to reverse his over-sized truck out of Sydney’s M5 tunnel after trying to enter it in error... The TWU is calling for a national auditing, education and industrial rights fund paid into by all employers along the supply chain to address the problem...

Pretoria,South Africa -Times Live, by JANA MARAIS -Jul 3, 2010: -- Trucks came to a standstill at Beitbridge border post this week as the Department of Home Affairs clamped down on foreign drivers of South African-registered vehicles... New PNP * Canada - Truckers not included

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -27 Feb 2009: -- ... Still considered a pilot program, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is now named Opportunities Ontario. Like similar programs across the country, its goal is to help companies recruit and sponsor foreign workers to come to Canada in order to work in industries that face serious shortages... It has been expanded to welcome 1,000 applicants -- twice as many as before. But while the government boasts that there's now a broader range of qualifying categories (up from only 20 occupations previously), truck driving still isn't recognized as a "skilled" profession under the program... Ontario only accepts skill types 0, A or B from the National Occupation Classification (NOC), which includes supervisors for construction and transportation -- as well as butchers, bakers, and arts performers -- but not truck drivers...

Foreign Drivers * Canada - Trucking firm complains others hiring away its

Saskatoon,Saskatchewan,Canada -Saskatchewan News Network, by Murray Lyons -December 13, 2007: -- The owner of a Saskatoon area trucking company says it's too easy for other trucking companies to hire away his new immigrant drivers... Jim Clunie of Kelsey Trail Trucking Ltd. in Dundurn, a company specializing in flat deck loads across Canada, says a group of Filipino long-haul truck drivers who arrived at his firm just this spring and summer recently gave notice... Clunie says his understanding is that most of those Filipino workers who handed in their notice in the past month are being hired by Siemens Transportation Group Inc., the parent company of Kindersley Transport and its flat bed sister company, Edge Transportation... Clunie says he's upset enough to investigate if there are legal options to recoup what he says are $13,500 in costs incurred by Kelsey Trail in recruiting each Filipino driver, including air fares, settlement costs and training expenses...
