Foreign Truckers * South Africa - Home affairs puts brakes on

Pretoria,South Africa -Times Live, by JANA MARAIS -Jul 3, 2010: -- Trucks came to a standstill at Beitbridge border post this week as the Department of Home Affairs clamped down on foreign drivers of South African-registered vehicles... The Pretoria High Court granted trucking companies an urgent interdict on Thursday morning, forcing officials to grant foreigners access on a tourist visa, as has been standard practice for many years... About 2000 foreigners, out of a total of 15000 to 20000 truck drivers, operate South African-registered vehicles. The department stopped foreigners driving with tourist visas at the beginning of the year. While the law requires work permits, tourist visas have been accepted for as long as 30 years, according to court documents... South African companies involved in cross-border transport employ foreign drivers for a number of reasons. SA drivers are often not keen to spend so much time away from their families, while the neighbouring countries are perceived as dangerous...
