GREEN NEWS * Europe

* Belgium - Air quality measurement with Toyota app

Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -15 Feb 2012: -- Toyota has announced the launch of an application for iPhone and Android, enabling users to measure air quality. Wherever the user is, the quantity of particulates suspended in the air can be known using this application, also called ‘Air Quality’. To do this, the application uses recent data from the Interregional Environmental Unit (CELINE). Toyota is a pioneer in petrol/electric hybrids, which emit no particulates, and no emissions at all when in electric only mode in urban driving situations. The company recently delivered its 400,000th hybrid in Europe, at a ceremony in Brussels...

GREEN NEWS * USA - Senators Target Cross-border Trash Trucking

Michigan’s Levin, Stabenow applaud end of city waste shipments from Ontario

Lansing,Michigan,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Jan 18, 2011: -- Michigan is trashing one type of cross-border trucking — the hauling of waste from Toronto and other Canadian cities to the Great Lake State... Ontario stopped hauling municipal waste to Michigan Dec. 31, ending a long battle with the state and its U.S. senators, Democrats Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow... Levin and Stabenow negotiated an agreement with Ontario in 2006 that phased out municipal waste shipments to Michigan over four years, ending in 2010... The agreement stops 40,000 trash trucks from hauling 1.5 million tons of city waste a year from the Canadian province to Michigan, according to the senators... The battle now shifts to non-municipal waste from private industry and other sources still trucked from Canada to Michigan landfills, they said... EPA Ruling * USA - Great News For Cleantech

Greentech investors and entrepreneurs are guardedly optimistic that the Environmental Protection Agency's ruling that greenhouse gases are harmful to human health will provide a boost to their industry

Washington,DC,USA -Forbes, by Andy Stone -18 April 2009: --
EPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, signed the agency's 133-page endangerment finding, legally obligating the agency to regulate carbon dioxide and related greenhouse gas emissions... The landmark decision could force the automotive industry and electric utilities, which together account for one-half of such U.S. emissions, to take drastic steps to cut emissions... If the EPA's endangerment finding is upheld following a 60-day public comment period, the agency is likely to begin the process of requiring automakers, utilities and a vast swath of U.S. industry to spend billions of dollars on technologies to slash C02 emissions that many scientists say contribute to global warming...

"GREEN" NEWS * USA - California Cuts Requirement for Zero-Emission Vehicles

California again reduces electric, fuel-cell vehicle requirements

Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Post -28 Mar 2008: -- Originally targeted 10% of all vehicles sold in 2003 to be zero-emission. New rule requires 7,500 zero-emission vehicles by 2014... About 1.5M new vehicles sold in CA each year. CA wants automakers to sell 60K plug-in hybrids... No automaker has a commercially viable zero-emission vehicle... CA regulators were facing lawsuit from automakers... More important, they just didn't see automakers mass-producing hydrogen cars... Ruling allows automakers to focus on promising technologies... Move has upset environmentalists but gives relief to automakers... 12 other states adopted CA regulations; likely to follow CA's lead... (Photo by Rich Pedroncelli/ AP - A solar powered electric vehicle, with a replica power plug, is seen parked outside the California Environmental Protection Agency, in Sacramento, Calif., where state air regulators met to consider cutting back the state's clean air-program in Thursday, March 27, 2008. Baltimore,MD,USA -Green Energy News -May 19, 2007: -- Lithium is the premier rechargeable battery technology of the day. However did you know that most lithium battery packs are just boxes containers of flashlight battery-sized cells? Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC) thinks that specially-designed, large format lithium batteries are a better bet than a bunch of little cells for hybrids and all-electric vehicles... In a new product line the company is offering its lithium iron phosphate technology (LiFePO4) in cells ranging from 6 Amp/hours to 35... LTC’ says the new cells can provide 3000 charging cycles which equates to 150,000 miles of service life... To prove the new cells’ capabilities, the company will soon unwrap a Toyota Prius retrofitted with its new batteries.
