STRIKE * Canada: Drivers haven’t had an increase in pay in a decade and are working longer hours

* Ontario - Container truckers strike for overdue pay raise
-- Participants in a week-old strike by hundreds of Ontario truckers who transport shipping containers hope their action will disrupt the industry enough to get a better deal for drivers... But some shippers warn the fallout, while minimal so far, could grow if the strike continues... The fledgling Container Trucking Association of Ontario says its drivers haven’t had an increase in pay in a decade and are working longer hours... The group isn’t unionized and wants truckers to be classified as skilled workers. It describes itself as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to representing the interests of independent truckers. Chopra said drivers’ operating costs keep rising and they wait longer than ever at rail yards, while their rates of payment haven’t changed in a decade... Some of their members have blocked CP and CN rail yards to delay shipments in and out. They’re also staging their trucks and holding picket lines...

* Toronto: Truck strike ends after deal struck on wage increases

-- Independent truckers ended a more than week-long protest that ground Toronto area cargo deliveries to a near-halt after they said transport companies agreed to raise their wages... The details of the deal between CTAO members and transport company CEOs were still unclear Wednesday afternoon. The group, which operates as a nonprofit, had asked transport companies recognize independent container truck drivers as “skilled workers,” a classification that would allow them to unionize — something not mentioned in any statements or posts made by the group...
