-- New low-frequency sirens that can be "felt" will be installed in 25 fire trucks in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, to alert headphone-wearing pedestrians and drivers to get out of the way... The state government announced the rollout of the "rumbler" subwoofer sirens, which will be installed on the front of the fire truck to creates vibrations that can be felt from a range of up to 60 metres... Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said "response times are deteriorating" as it becomes "harder and harder" for fire trucks to navigate inner city areas owing to inattentive motorists, cyclists and pedestrians... Initial trials showed that fire trucks saved up to 30 seconds for five minutes of driving, he said... The total cost of the rollout is $50,000, with the fit out for each unit costing around $2000... One truck in Sydney has been trialling the system for a year, with two more trucks to be fitted per week until there is a fleet of 25... New York Police Department and Boston Fire Department use the same "Rumbler" system...
