TRUCKERS SHORTAGE * New Zealand: WOMEN IN TRUCKING
* Fairfax - Two inspiring women
(Photo: Sam Hanna has a real 'get up and go' attitude)
-- Sam Hanna, who was born into a farming family in 1991, attended Matamata College and during her sixth form year she entered a programme called 'Gateway' which incorporates one day per week for work experience. She had intentions of entering the motor trade industry but the 'knowledgeable' school instructor told her she did not have the temperament to "cut it" in that industry and suggested a few alternatives... Sam's Mum was surprised with the work direction her daughter was taking but her Dad was 'rapt' when Sam finished school and went straight into a job at Baigent Motors in Matamata as an assistant auto electrician. Sam approached On-Site Auto Electrical for a position which would allow her to commence an official apprenticeship. She obtained employment with J. Swap Contractors in Matamata as an auto electrician's assistant in their large workshops... Sam has been trained in ABS repairs, GPS and air-conditioning servicing and repairs, as well as in all aspects of the auto electrical work required to maintain the entire fleet of vehicles operating in the J. Swap Contractors' operation, which of course includes a mobile service van she works from... The company runs everything from small utes to hundreds of trucks and heavy machinery in its quarries, and Sam must keep them all in good working condition. She is not one to sit back and hope things come to her. Sam has a 'get-up-and-go' attitude and has already achieved most of the things she set out to do at this stage... Sam and her partner have purchased their own home, and her mum and dad are delighted with her position and the fact that she has made her mark in the transport industry...
(Photo: RACHEL KELLY/FAIRFAX NZ - Kerri Wyllie of Gore Freight and Storage won the King Rig trophy at the Gore Truck Show)
... Following on from coverage of the Gore Truck Show in last month's NZ Trucking, Fairfax Media's Rachel Kelly caught up with Kerri Wylie the show's very first female King Rig winner... Kerri spent all day on Friday cleaning her UD truck and was hoping just to take out the Best Female Driver trophy – so it came as a bit of a surprise for her truck to be named King Rig. She's the first female to win the King Rig trophy at the Gore Truck Show... FAIRFAX, NZ - Stuff.co.nz, by WALLY BOWATER AND RACHEL KELLY - July 21 2015
